Bus Tragedy in Gurgaon: Trainee Driver Causes Fatal Accident
A devastating incident unfolded in Gurgaon on Friday afternoon when a trainee driver allegedly took a Haryana Roadways bus without permission during a lunch break and drove into pedestrians near the Sector 37 industrial area. The accident resulted in the death of a 56-year-old man and left another person injured.
The deceased has been identified as Ravi Shankar, a factory worker originally from Satna, Madhya Pradesh, who was residing in Sector 37. According to police, Shankar was out on a post-lunch walk with his coworkers when the bus suddenly bore down on them. Many managed to escape by jumping aside, but Shankar was struck.
Local residents rushed both victims to a nearby hospital, where Shankar was declared dead on arrival. The other injured person, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, is currently undergoing treatment. An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The bus, which originated from the Sector 12 depot, eventually collided with a parked car and came to a halt, narrowly missing a loading tempo. Eyewitnesses reported that bystanders shouted at the driver to stop and even pelted the bus with stones. The accused driver, identified as 25-year-old Bharat, then drove the bus back to the training ground near Leisure Valley Park, parked it quietly, and fled the scene. His phone remained switched off, according to roadways officials. Police later seized the bus after reaching the spot.
Details of the Training Program
The bus had left the depot around 10:30 am as part of a month-long training program for new drivers. The program was conducted under the supervision of inspector Vidyanand and comprised 15 to 16 trainees. The batch was just seven days away from completing the course, which had begun around May 18.
A training officer stated, “The trainees were having lunch during the afternoon break at around 1:30 pm when Bharat allegedly took the bus and drove away without informing the instructors. No one else was inside the vehicle.”
Officials noted that the depot raised the alarm after noticing a bus was missing and later confirmed it was the same vehicle involved in the accident. “Statements of roadways officials and witnesses are being recorded. The postmortem of the deceased will be conducted on Saturday,” a senior police officer said.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are actively investigating the incident and have launched a search for the accused driver. The incident has raised concerns about the supervision and security protocols during driver training programs. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
