Trichy residents face open drain hazards and damaged roads
Trichy residents struggle with open drains and damaged roads

Residents of Ponnagar in ward 55 of Trichy corporation are grappling with hazardous road conditions and open drains that threaten the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and two-wheeler riders. Although authorities have implemented some solutions, residents claim that the rushed work fails to alleviate their hardships and fears.

Open Drain Danger

According to residents, an open drain on the main approach road of Ponnagar runs level with the carriageway without any safety kerb, causing two-wheeler riders and pedestrians to slip into it at night. This has led to multiple accidents and near-misses.

Unrestored Roads

Roads in Ponnagar, Selva Nagar, and Nakshatra Nagar, damaged during the 24x7 drinking water project, remain unrepaired. Residents were promised that the local body would relay the roads before the assembly election, but they still struggle with pothole-ridden streets.

“After we complained, the local body hastily installed a few flexible spring poles to caution commuters about open drains, but those are insufficient. I invested my own money and installed additional reflectors near drains,” said N Prasannam, a resident of New Selva Nagar.

Although speed breakers were installed to slow down vehicles, residents say their placement is incorrect. They demand that drains be covered with removable RCC slabs to prevent falls.

“I will conduct an inspection in the ward and insist officials take up proper corrective work,” said Mayor Mu Anbalagan.
