Two killed in illegal cracker blast in Tuticorin

Two workers were killed and one injured while illegally manufacturing a large-sized cracker on Tuesday in Kovilpatti, Tuticorin district. The deceased were identified as Malathi, 25, from Virudhunagar district, and Ayyappan, 30, from Puliyankulam. Another worker, Surya Prakash, 25, sustained serious burn injuries.

Details of the Incident

According to police, the workers were engaged in the illegal production of large-sized crackers using newspapers near the Puliangulam area bordering Sattur in Virudhunagar district. At around 9 pm, a sudden explosion occurred while mixing chemicals for the crackers, killing the duo instantly and injuring the third worker. The mixing took place in a small 10x10-foot room belonging to a temple.

Response and Investigation

Upon receiving information, fire and rescue personnel along with police rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital. The injured worker was given first aid at Kovilpatti Government Hospital and later referred to Tuticorin Government Medical College Hospital.

A case has been registered at Kovilpatti West Police Station, and further investigation is underway. Preliminary findings indicate that the workers had experience in cracker manufacturing and were involved in illegal production.
