The state irrigation department is set to take measures to address seepage from the Varasgaon dam, one of the primary water sources for Pune city and its rural areas. The initiative follows concerns similar to those at the Temghar dam wall. A comprehensive study will be conducted at the dam site to determine the exact nature of the seepages, after which corrective actions will be implemented. The study is expected to cost approximately Rs 2.77 crore.
Ultrasonic and Other Techniques to Assess Seepage
To evaluate the quantum of seepage, the department will employ ultrasonic sound and other advanced techniques. The work is being planned under the guidelines of the Dam Safety Act. Officials have assured that the Varasgaon dam wall is completely safe, and steps will be taken to plug the seepages through grouting and other cement injection methods.
Officials' Statements on the Process
An irrigation department official stated, "We will know the exact details of seepages only after the completion of the preliminary study. There are different ways to stop the seepages. The department will finalise the options based on the outcome of the study. A first step for the study is to go for boreholes."
Remaining Temghar Dam Work Likely After Monsoon
The final phase of repairs and strengthening of the Temghar dam wall is expected to commence after the upcoming monsoon season. The irrigation department has approached the state government for funds to complete the remaining works.
