In the wake of the devastating hooch tragedy in Pune, the Maharashtra excise department has arrested 213 individuals across three districts for their involvement in the illegal manufacturing and sale of liquor. The crackdown has been intensified in the coastal Konkan region, where authorities are conducting raids to dismantle illicit liquor networks.
Massive Crackdown in Konkan Region
The excise department has launched a coordinated operation targeting illegal distilleries and sale points in the districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The arrests were made over the past 48 hours, with officials seizing large quantities of illicit liquor, raw materials, and equipment used in the production process.
Details of the Operation
According to excise commissioner officials, the raids were based on intelligence inputs about the proliferation of illegal liquor units following the Pune tragedy, which claimed over 30 lives. The arrested individuals include bootleggers, distributors, and sellers who were allegedly operating without licenses and selling spurious alcohol.
The excise department has also issued warnings to local communities about the dangers of consuming illicit liquor and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities. The crackdown is expected to continue in the coming weeks as authorities aim to curb the menace of illegal liquor in the state.
Government Response
Maharashtra Chief Minister has directed the excise department to take strict action against those involved in the illegal liquor trade. The state government has also announced compensation for the families of the victims of the Pune hooch tragedy and promised to strengthen enforcement mechanisms.
The recent tragedy has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter regulation of the liquor industry in Maharashtra. Opposition parties have demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for the lapses that led to the incident.
