Gujarat Assembly Updates on Narmada Canal Progress and Local Issues
The Gujarat government provided a detailed update in the state assembly, revealing that a significant portion of the Narmada canal network remains under construction. As of January 31, 2026, a total of 5,889.91 kilometres of the canal system is still incomplete. This information was shared in response to a question posed by MLA Amit Chavda, highlighting the ongoing efforts to develop this critical water infrastructure project.
Breakdown of Canal Construction Status
In its reply, the government outlined the specific segments of the canal network that are yet to be finished. The construction of the entire 432-kilometre-long main canal has been successfully completed. However, work on other sections is still pending:
- 35.7 kilometres of the branch canal network remains to be built.
- 157.89 kilometres of sub-branch canal work is still outstanding.
- A substantial 5,696.32 kilometres of minor canal construction is yet to be completed.
This data underscores the scale of the remaining work, particularly in the minor canal segments, which are crucial for distributing water to agricultural and rural areas across the state.
Fake Farmer Certificate Complaints in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar
In a separate response to Congress MLA Amit Chavda, the government addressed concerns over fraudulent agricultural land acquisitions. Over the past two years, ending on January 31, 2026, there have been 89 complaints in Ahmedabad and 85 instances in Gandhinagar where individuals obtained agricultural land using fake documents. The authorities confirmed that all complaints have been thoroughly investigated, with action taken in 24 cases in Gandhinagar and 28 cases in Ahmedabad, demonstrating a commitment to addressing such irregularities.
Arrests Made in Tadkeshwar Water Tank Collapse Case
The state government also informed the assembly about developments in the Tadkeshwar water tank collapse incident. In January of this year, a newly constructed water tank collapsed in Surat's Tadkeshwar village, prompting an investigation. As of Tuesday, eight persons have been arrested in connection with the case. This information was provided in response to questions from Congress MLAs Tushar Chaudhary, Shailesh Parmar, and Jignesh Mevani, highlighting the government's focus on accountability and safety in infrastructure projects.
These updates from the Gujarat assembly session reflect ongoing challenges and actions in infrastructure development, land fraud, and public safety, with implications for water management and governance in the state.
