In a significant political development, a former Member of Parliament has claimed that seven MPs from various parties are set to join the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde before the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. This move is part of a strategy codenamed 'Operation Tiger', aimed at bolstering the party's strength in the Lok Sabha.
Operation Tiger Unveiled
The former MP, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the plan has been in the works for several weeks. 'Operation Tiger' is designed to induct lawmakers who are dissatisfied with their current parties, particularly those from the opposition bloc. The induction is expected to take place just before the Monsoon Session, which is likely to begin in July.
Impact on Political Equations
If the claim holds true, the addition of seven MPs would significantly strengthen the Shinde Sena's position in Parliament. Currently, the faction has 40 MPs in the Lok Sabha. The move could also alter the balance of power in the Maharashtra legislative assembly, where the Shinde-led government is already in a comfortable position with support from the BJP and other allies.
The former MP further stated that more MPs from other states are also in touch with the Shinde camp, indicating that 'Operation Tiger' might extend beyond the initial seven. This comes amidst ongoing efforts by the ruling coalition to consolidate its base ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Reactions from Political Circles
Political analysts view this as a strategic move to counter the opposition's narrative and to project the Shinde Sena as a growing force. However, the opposition parties have dismissed the claim as 'wishful thinking' and accused the ruling alliance of using unethical means to lure lawmakers.
Meanwhile, the Shinde Sena leadership has neither confirmed nor denied the development, stating that they are focused on serving the people of Maharashtra. The Monsoon Session is expected to be a crucial test for the government, with several key bills and issues on the agenda.
