Solapur Tragedy: Pickup Van Carrying Pilgrims Falls into Well
In a devastating accident in Maharashtra's Solapur district, at least eight people were killed and seven others injured when a pickup van carrying pilgrims veered off the road and plunged into a well. The incident occurred on Sunday morning near the village of Kati, approximately 350 kilometers from Mumbai.
The victims were part of a group of devotees returning from a religious ceremony at a local temple. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which then crashed through a railing and fell into a deep well on the roadside.
Rescue and Relief Operations
Local residents immediately alerted the police and emergency services. Rescue teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and fire brigade, rushed to the spot. Using ropes and ladders, they managed to pull out the injured and retrieve the bodies. The injured have been admitted to a nearby government hospital, where their condition is stated to be stable.
District authorities have announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.
Investigation Underway
Police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the van might have been overloaded and the driver may have been driving at high speed. The well, which was uncovered, has been a point of concern for locals who had previously demanded fencing around it.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the need for road safety measures and proper maintenance of rural infrastructure. The state government has assured strict action against those responsible for any negligence.
