AAP Family Sweeps Three Wards in Punjab Civic Polls

In a historic first for Doraha’s municipal council, a single family swept three wards in Punjab’s civic elections, securing a decisive majority for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The family, comprising veteran local politician Sudarshan Kumar Sharma, his wife Priya Sharma, and their 27-year-old son Anmol Sharma, defeated opposition candidates across separate wards, helping AAP clinch an 8-7 majority in the 15-member local body.

Landmark Victory for the Sharma Family

Sudarshan Kumar Sharma, 57, won Ward 8 by a margin of 211 votes, defeating Congress candidate Mandeep Singh Mangat. Sharma, who first entered public office in 1992, has now won seven local elections. His wife, Priya Sharma, 52, secured her third council term by defeating Congress candidate Saroj Rani by 47 votes in Ward 5. Their son, Anmol Sharma, completed the sweep in Ward 6, defeating Congress rival Pardeep Bansal by 113 votes to win his first term.

Commitment to Development

Following their victories, the family visited a local temple to thank residents and the deity. “I have been serving this community for 35 years,” Sudarshan Sharma said, adding that his wife remains dedicated to her constituents. “Development will be our absolute priority.” The Sharmas, aligned with AAP for five years, plan to lobby Payal constituency lawmakers to fund a new sports ground, a college, and updated municipal infrastructure.

Returning Officer Nirpal Singh confirmed the family’s victories, noting they are expected to collect their official election certificates within the next two days. The family’s educational background includes Sudarshan holding a master’s degree, while his wife and son both hold bachelor’s degrees.

Broader Implications for AAP

The family’s collective win gives them immense leverage over local infrastructure and development strategy. AAP’s success in Doraha mirrors a broader Punjab-wide surge, with the party capturing 57 out of 112 seats across six municipal elections.
