AAP MLA Malik Clashes with J&K Admin Over Denied Tour

Over a month after his release from detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, has again clashed with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and administration over allegations that they are not allowing him to conduct a political tour across the Union Territory.

Tour Denied Without Written Response

Malik was scheduled to begin his political tour from Anantnag in Kashmir on Sunday, but he did not receive permission. In a letter to the Director General of Police, Malik stated that he and his office-bearers from various districts had applied nearly a month in advance for permission for the tour across Jammu and Kashmir. He claimed that no written reply was provided to him or his district presidents. Instead, he alleged that police officials made trivial arguments, creating a chaotic situation for his volunteers and party members.

Constitutional Rights at Stake

Malik asserted that he has no intention of inciting political unrest. The sole purpose of the tour, he explained, is to have healthy public interaction with his supporters. However, he said the inharmonious stance taken by the J&K Police suggests that his constitutional rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of travel within the country, are under threat and being jeopardized.

Earlier Security Cover Concerns

Malik had previously raised concerns on social media when the administration allegedly reduced his security cover. In a letter dated June 4 to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, he urged the restoration of his security detail. He noted that his escort vehicle had been withdrawn, exposing him to considerable risk given his frequent public interactions, extensive travel, and the security challenges associated with his position. He emphasized that retaining the escort vehicle is essential for his safety and for enabling him to discharge his public duties effectively.

Background of Detention

Malik was detained in September last year for allegedly disturbing public order and was lodged in Kathua jail. He was released on April 28 after his PSA was revoked. The current dispute marks his latest confrontation with the authorities since his release.
