AAP Legislators Stage Protest Outside Delhi Assembly, Demand Revocation of Suspended MLAs

New Delhi: Functionaries of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a significant protest outside the Delhi Assembly on Monday, vociferously demanding the immediate revocation of the suspension of four party MLAs. The suspended legislators are Sanjeev Jha, Jarnail Singh, Kuldeep Kumar, and Som Dutt.

Boycott of House Proceedings and Political Standoff

The MLAs were suspended during the previous sitting of the winter session, and this action remains in force as the session has not been formally prorogued. In a strong show of dissent, AAP legislators boycotted the House proceedings on Monday. AAP MLA Gopal Rai declared, “The boycott will continue on Tuesday as well if the suspension is not withdrawn.”

Leader of Opposition Atishi, along with other protesting members, was prevented from entering the assembly premises, leading to a heated argument with police personnel. Atishi accused the BJP-led government of attempting to suppress opposition voices, stating, “Whenever the BJP-led government does not have answers, it tries to crush the voice of the opposition in the arrogance of power.” She further alleged that this move is an effort to divert attention from critical issues such as electricity, water supply, hospital conditions, and the aftermath of the recent Palam fire incident.

Political Dynamics and Speaker's Response

The AAP holds 22 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, while the BJP commands a majority with 48 seats. Atishi revealed that on Saturday, a delegation of AAP MLAs met Speaker Vijender Gupta to seek a resolution, but no solution has been provided by either the BJP or the Speaker thus far.

In response to the boycott, Speaker Vijender Gupta criticized the AAP MLAs' actions, labeling their non-participation as “against the dignity of the House.” He clarified, “Sanjeev Jha, Kuldeep Kumar, Jarnail Singh, and Som Dutt are currently under suspension. As the session has not been prorogued, the suspension continues and they cannot attend the House. However, no AAP MLA participated in the proceedings on Monday.”

Accusations of Undermining Parliamentary Traditions

Speaker Gupta expressed deep regret over the protest, stating, “Protesting outside instead of engaging in discussion is contrary to established parliamentary traditions.” He highlighted that since the issue of desecration of the Sikh Gurus was raised in the last session, the Leader of the Opposition has been absent from the House. Gupta asserted, “Failing to participate in the proceedings of the House and obstructing the democratic process in this manner is akin to hijacking constitutional institutions.”

The ongoing standoff underscores the escalating tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition AAP in Delhi, with both sides firmly entrenched in their positions regarding the suspension and the broader democratic process.
