Court Sentences AAP MLA's Husband to Two Years in Jail in Cheque Bounce Case

A Dera Bassi court has delivered a significant verdict in a long-standing legal case, sentencing three partners of a housing project firm, including Shahbaz Singh Sohi, the husband of Kharar AAP MLA Anmol Gagan Maan, to two years of imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the accused in connection with a 2018 cheque bounce case.

Details of the Case and Accused

The case was filed by Kamaljit Singh, a resident of Sector 21 in Panchkula, against M/S Platinum Smart Buildcon LLP and its three partners. The complaint was lodged under Section 138/142 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, read with Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code, alleging fraudulent practices.

According to the complainant, the firm had entered into an agreement for the sale of plots in Silver City, Rajpura, but the deal failed to materialize. As part of the arrangement, the accused issued a cheque worth Rs 3.5 crore to Kamaljit Singh, which subsequently bounced when he attempted to encash it, leading to the legal proceedings.

The other two individuals sentenced alongside Shahbaz Singh Sohi are Nachhatar Singh, a resident of Naraingarh, and Jatinder Singh from Zirakpur. All three were found guilty by the court, highlighting the serious nature of the financial misconduct involved.

Bail Granted After Sentencing

Following the pronouncement of the two-year jail term and fine, the court granted bail to Shahbaz Singh Sohi and the two other accused. This development allows them temporary freedom while they potentially explore legal avenues for appeal or further proceedings in the case.

The bail decision underscores the judicial process's balance between delivering justice and ensuring the rights of the accused during ongoing legal battles.

Background on Anmol Gagan Maan and Shahbaz Singh Sohi

Anmol Gagan Maan, the AAP MLA from Kharar, solemnized her marriage with advocate Shahbaz Singh Sohi on June 16, 2024. At the time of their wedding, she was serving as a Cabinet Minister in the Punjab government, adding a political dimension to this legal matter.

This case brings attention to the intersection of politics and legal issues, as it involves a family member of a prominent political figure in Punjab. The verdict may have implications for the public perception and political standing of the individuals involved.

The sentencing in this 2018 cheque bounce case marks a significant chapter in the ongoing legal scrutiny of financial dealings in the region, with the court's decision emphasizing accountability in commercial transactions.
