AAP Condemns Centre's BBMB Rule Amendment as Unconstitutional Federal Attack
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has launched a fierce opposition against the Central government's recent amendment to the rules governing appointments within the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). On Tuesday, the party labeled this regulatory change as a "forceful" maneuver and a direct "attack on the federal structure," specifically designed to erode Punjab's established rights over its vital resources and institutions.
Minister Bains Accuses BJP of Undermining Punjab's Sovereignty
Punjab Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains has leveled serious allegations against the BJP-led Central government, asserting that this amendment represents a calculated effort to tighten control over the state's key institutions and natural resources. "The BJP does not want to miss any opportunity to undermine Punjab and usurp its rights," Bains declared emphatically.
He further criticized the amendment as unconstitutional, stating, "It is a direct attack on Punjab's rights and the federal structure. Removing the mandatory provision of appointing a Punjabi officer not only undermines local expertise but also poses a significant threat to the state's core interests." Bains has demanded an immediate rollback of this decision and called upon BJP leaders in Punjab to publicly clarify their position on this contentious issue.
Goyal Warns of Diluted Conventions and Financial Burdens
Cabinet Minister Barinder Goyal has characterized the Centre's move as a "deliberate and forceful attempt" to interfere with Punjab's control over its essential resources. He highlighted that long-standing conventions, where Punjab traditionally holds the member (power) post and Haryana the member (irrigation) post, have historically ensured a balanced management approach. However, Goyal warned that these conventions are now being diluted through what he described as "clever wording" in the amended rules.
Goyal also raised concerns about the financial implications for Punjab, citing increased costs due to the deployment of central security forces at critical dam sites. He issued a stern warning against any attempts to alter the existing water-sharing arrangements, which are crucial for the state's agricultural and economic stability.
Pannu Alleges Centre's Intent to Capture Punjab's Water Resources
AAP Punjab Media In-charge Baltej Pannu has voiced strong apprehensions regarding the Centre's intentions behind making key BBMB posts "open" to outsiders. Pannu asserted that this move clearly demonstrates the Central government's intent to "capture Punjab's water" and extend its control over other significant institutions, including Panjab University and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
The Aam Aadmi Party has firmly stated its commitment to opposing any and all measures that weaken Punjab's rights and interests. The party vows to continue its resistance against what it perceives as an encroachment on the state's autonomy and a violation of the principles of federalism enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
