AAP Government Showcases Employment and Anti-Drug Achievements in Punjab Assembly
During a spirited discussion on the governor's address in the Punjab legislative assembly, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented a comprehensive overview of the Aam Aadmi Party government's accomplishments since taking office. The minister emphasized that the administration began its tenure with a powerful symbolic gesture by advertising 30,000 government positions, signaling a commitment to youth employment from day one.
Substantial Job Creation and Educational Enhancement
"To date, our administration has successfully provided 63,000 government jobs to the youth of Punjab," declared Cheema. He described this initiative as monumental, noting that it has restored younger generations' faith in state governance and served as a critical deterrent against the concerning brain drain phenomenon that has plagued Punjab for years.
The finance minister also highlighted significant advancements in technical education infrastructure. "To address the growing demand for skill development, we have increased Industrial Training Institute capacity by 20,000 seats," Cheema explained. He contrasted this with previous administrations, pointing out that Punjab's 35,000 ITI seats frequently remained vacant under prior governments, indicating a mismatch between educational offerings and youth aspirations.
Aggressive Anti-Drug Campaign and Social Justice Reforms
Turning to the persistent challenge of drug abuse, Cheema delivered sharp criticism against previous ruling parties. "The infamous term 'Chitta' originated during the tenure of the SAD-BJP alliance," he asserted. The minister recalled how Captain Amarinder Singh took a solemn oath holding the holy Gutka Sahib during the 2017 Assembly election campaign but completely failed to curb the drug menace throughout his regime.
"In stark contrast, our AAP government is driving the final nail into the coffin of Punjab's drug trade through the aggressive launch of our 'Yudh Nashean Virudh' campaign," Cheema proclaimed with conviction.
Regarding social justice initiatives, Cheema reflected on his time as opposition leader when previous governments ignored his demands for Scheduled Caste reservation in government lawyer recruitment. "Today, under the AAP government, this reservation is officially implemented, resulting in the successful recruitment of 58 lawyers from weaker sections of society," he announced, framing this as a landmark achievement in equitable representation.
Cabinet Minister Challenges Congress on Unfulfilled Promises
Cabinet Minister Aman Arora joined the debate with pointed criticism directed at the Congress party. Referencing Congress's 2017 election manifesto, Arora challenged opposition leaders to "show even a single promise they fulfilled during their five-year tenure."
He specifically highlighted Congress's 'Ghar-Ghar Rozgar' flagship scheme and their promise of a Rs 2,500 monthly unemployment allowance to every jobless youth. "Over five years, this amounted to Rs 1.5 lakh per person," Arora calculated. "Can you show me one youth in Punjab who actually received this allowance from you?" he demanded, questioning the implementation of these ambitious proposals.
Arora further criticized Congress legislators for their response to party leader Rahul Gandhi's alleged remarks. "He threatened to 'neutralize' you, yet you sat with heads bowed. You should have resigned that very day," Arora remarked. He noted the irony that when the governor began listing the current government's achievements, these same Congress leaders chose to walk out of the assembly proceedings.
The assembly discussion revealed a government positioning itself as having delivered tangible results on employment, education, social justice, and drug enforcement, while framing previous administrations as having made empty promises and failed to address Punjab's most pressing challenges.
