KOLKATA: Soon after Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the ninth chief minister of West Bengal on Saturday, marking the first time a BJP leader has held the post in the state, the change was promptly reflected in his social media biography. The phrase "chief minister" made its debut in his bio on his official Facebook and X pages.
Mamata Banerjee's Strategic Bio Update
Mamata Banerjee, who has refused to resign as the chief minister while alleging irregularities in the assembly elections held last month, has also updated her social media bio. She now describes herself as the founder chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress and "chief minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th and 17th Vidhan Sabha)." The words "former chief minister" were carefully omitted, in line with her ongoing protest against the election results.
Election Results and Political Shift
The BJP swept the Bengal assembly elections, winning 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, ending the 15-year-long Trinamool Congress rule in the state. Banerjee, who came to office in 2011, has not formally tendered her resignation from the post. Instead, she has alleged irregularities in the electoral process, claiming that discrepancies in nearly 100 constituencies led to her party's defeat.
The change in social media bios highlights the contrasting approaches of the two leaders: Adhikari embracing his new role, and Banerjee continuing to challenge the legitimacy of the election outcome.
