The Ahmedabad city police commissioner has issued a notification imposing traffic restrictions and diversions on several key stretches on Tuesday, April 28, in view of the counting of votes for the local body elections. According to the directive, vehicular movement will not be permitted around two major counting centres — LD Engineering College in Navrangpura near Gujarat University, and the Gujarat College campus in Ellisbridge. The notification stated that all vehicles passing through the notified routes will remain restricted or diverted during the counting process. To ensure smoother movement for commuters, alternative routes have been identified, including diversions through Helmet Circle, Panchvati, Town Hall Road, and other nearby roads. The restrictions will be enforced from midnight of April 27-28 until midnight of April 28-29.
Exemptions and Legal Action
Emergency services, including ambulances, fire tenders, and police vehicles, have been exempted from the order. Police have cautioned that violations of the traffic restrictions will invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, along with relevant provisions of the Gujarat Police Act.
Publicity and Cooperation
The notification has been forwarded to senior state officials, civic authorities, and police stations across Ahmedabad, with directions to give the order wide publicity through newspapers, radio, and social media. Citizens have been requested to cooperate with the traffic arrangements and plan travels accordingly to avoid inconvenience during the counting exercise.
