Ahmedabad: One year after the AI 171 crash, a relative of three victims on Thursday accused Air India and the Tata Group of failing to support affected families, citing compensation disputes, poor communication and attempts to suppress concerns raised by him over a recovered mobile phone belonging to his deceased brother.
Speaking to the media in Ahmedabad, Romin Vohra, a resident of Thasra village in Kheda district, said three members of his family — his brother, niece and aunt — had died in the crash. Vohra alleged that despite repeated attempts over the past year, his family received little response from Air India or Tata representatives.
A major part of Vohra’s allegations centred on a damaged iPhone reportedly recovered months after the crash. “While emails sent to me showed the recovered phone in intact condition, the device handed over later was damaged. During a meeting on March 31 this year, officials offered me cash and a replacement phone, but I wanted the data as it contained memories of my brother and child,” he alleged.
He also alleged irregularities in the distribution of compensation linked to the victims. “The entire compensation amount was transferred to my sister-in-law without the consent of my parents or other family members. Repeated emails seeking clarification from Tata representatives did not receive satisfactory responses,” he claimed. “Not a single penny was given to us,” he alleged, adding that he had also shared religious and legal documents related to inheritance claims with company representatives.
