The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) witnessed a significant political development as its warring factions patched up, with rebel MLAs led by former minister Velumani meeting party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The meeting, held on May 27, 2026, marked a step towards unity within the party, which had been divided for months.
Rebel MLAs Rejoin Mainstream
Shortly after the meeting with Palaniswami, Velumani—accompanied by former minister Dr. C. Vijayabaskar, legislators supporting him, and senior leaders including Agri S. S. Krishnamurthy, who supports Palaniswami—called on Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J. C. D. Prabhakar. The group submitted a letter to the Speaker, stating that they would function as one party in the Assembly, ending the factional rift that had raised concerns about the party's stability.
Unity Pledge
In the letter submitted to the Speaker, the MLAs affirmed their commitment to work together under the leadership of Palaniswami. The move is seen as a strategic consolidation ahead of future political challenges, including the upcoming local body elections and the 2027 Assembly elections. Velumani, who had previously led a faction demanding greater representation and policy changes, expressed confidence that the reunification would strengthen the party's position in Tamil Nadu politics.
The AIADMK has been grappling with internal dissent since the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 2016, with factions emerging around different leaders. The latest patch-up is expected to bring discipline and cohesion, allowing the party to focus on its agenda and counter the ruling DMK's influence. Political analysts view this development as a positive sign for the AIADMK's electoral prospects, as a united front is likely to appeal to its traditional voter base.
Party workers and supporters have welcomed the decision, hoping it will end the infighting that had weakened the organization. The AIADMK now aims to project itself as a disciplined and united alternative to the DMK, with Palaniswami's leadership being endorsed by the majority of the party's legislators. The coming months will test the durability of this newfound unity as the party prepares for key political battles.
