Chennai: In a significant political maneuver, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami orchestrated a high-profile alliance meeting at the party's headquarters, MGR Maaligai in Royapettah, Chennai, on Monday. This strategic decision was aimed at directly countering persistent criticism from political opponents, particularly DMK leader M.K. Stalin, who had accused the AIADMK of being subservient to the BJP following Palaniswami's recent visits to New Delhi for discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Symbolic Gesture to Reinforce AIADMK's Dominance in Tamil Nadu Alliance
The gathering at the AIADMK office was not merely a routine political meeting but a carefully planned symbolic gesture. By hosting the seat-sharing negotiations at the party headquarters, Palaniswami sought to emphatically convey that the AIADMK remains the undisputed head of the alliance in Tamil Nadu, with him as its unequivocal leader. This move marked a departure from recent electoral practices; during the 2019 and 2021 elections, similar formalities between the AIADMK and BJP were conducted at city hotels, unlike the tradition upheld during J. According to AMMK sources, Dhinakaran was initially reluctant to attend, having scheduled a meeting with Goyal at a city hotel at 1 PM. However, BJP leaders successfully persuaded him to join the gathering at MGR Maaligai.
Secrecy and Surprise: AIADMK Functionaries Unaware Until the Last Moment
The planning of this high-stakes meeting was shrouded in secrecy. AIADMK functionaries revealed they were completely unaware of the plan until Monday morning. A member of the AIADMK seat-sharing committee disclosed, "In the morning, we were asked to assemble at the party office by 11 AM." Senior party leaders began gathering at the venue, with Palaniswami arriving around 2:10 PM amidst enthusiastic sloganeering by party members. Within the next hour, the delegation from BJP, including state president Nainar Nagenthran along with Tamilisai Soundararajan and L. Murugan, reached the location, followed shortly by Anbumani Ramadoss.
Palaniswami's Firm Rebuttal to Criticism Over Delhi Visits
At a press conference held after finalizing the alliance deal, Palaniswami addressed the criticism head-on. He stated, "Our Delhi visits were to discuss the political situation and devise strategies. But Stalin criticized those visits as he was scared every time we went to Delhi." AIADMK insiders described this as a strategic masterstroke by EPS to effectively counter the narrative that the BJP was overshadowing the AIADMK in alliance decisions. Palaniswami had explicitly explained to the BJP leadership the necessity of finalizing the deal at the AIADMK office to reinforce the party's autonomous stature, a request to which the BJP agreed, subsequently leading other allies to follow suit.
