AIADMK's Women's Safety Protest Derailed by Controversial Remarks

What began as a coordinated political effort by the AIADMK and its allies to criticize the ruling DMK government over women's safety in Tamil Nadu has spectacularly backfired, turning into a significant embarrassment for the opposition party. The controversy erupted on Tuesday when senior AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam made inappropriate remarks referencing a prominent actress during a protest rally in Villupuram.

Shanmugam's Controversial Comments

While leading the protest against the DMK government's 'Ungal Kanavu Sollunga' (Tell me your dreams) initiative, Shanmugam attempted to question Chief Minister M K Stalin's ability to fulfill citizens' aspirations. However, his rhetorical question took an unacceptable turn when he specifically named a leading actress and asked, "I want to marry the actress, will you fulfil it?"

The remark initially drew laughter from some fellow party members on the dais and applause from a section of cadres, but the reaction quickly turned to widespread condemnation as the implications of the statement became clear.

Political Backlash and Condemnation

The backlash was swift and came from across the political spectrum, including from AIADMK's own allies. DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi strongly condemned the comments, stating, "Political civility or basic morality has never been the quality of AIADMK members," and questioned whether the party leadership would take disciplinary action.

DMK MP Tamilatchi Thangapandian described the comments as "uncivilised" and devoid of political ethics, while Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai demanded an immediate apology from Shanmugam.

Perhaps most damaging for the AIADMK was the criticism from its ally, the BJP. BJP functionary Khushbu Sundar called the remark "a shame on humanity" and emphasized that actresses are not property to be insulted on public platforms. The South Indian Artistes Association also joined in condemning the remarks and sought assurances that such incidents would not be repeated.

Compounding Controversies for AIADMK

The AIADMK's troubles multiplied when party treasurer Dindigul C Srinivasan also faced criticism for his speech during a parallel protest in Dindigul. Referring to free sarees being distributed by the DMK, Srinivasan questioned whether the party would also provide other attire for women, drawing further negative attention to the opposition's messaging.

AIADMK functionaries privately acknowledged that the former ministers' remarks had effectively "undone" the party's efforts to highlight what they claim is the DMK government's failure in protecting women across Tamil Nadu.

Palaniswami's Attempt to Refocus the Narrative

Earlier in the day, before the controversy erupted, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami had participated in a protest in Virugambakkam where he predicted a pro-people regime would come to power in May, ushering in what he called "Vasantha Kalam" (prosperity) and ensuring safety for women and children.

In a separate development aimed at demonstrating his commitment to women's safety, Palaniswami spoke with the parents of a 17-year-old girl who was found murdered inside a forest area near Vilathikulam in Tuticorin. He assured them over the phone that stern action would be taken against the perpetrators as soon as the AIADMK returned to power.

The incident has raised serious questions about political discourse in Tamil Nadu and has shifted attention away from the substantive issues of women's safety that the AIADMK had intended to highlight, creating significant challenges for the opposition party as it prepares for upcoming political battles.
