AIADMK's Worst Performance in 30 Years Threatens EPS Leadership

The AIADMK's recent electoral defeats have cast a shadow over Edappadi Palaniswami's position as the party's 'undisputed' leader. The party's tally of 47 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections marks its poorest performance since 1996, with even its traditional support base in the state's western belt eroding.

Erosion of Traditional Support

The AIADMK's decline is evident in its inability to retain its strongholds. Vijay's TVK party emerged as a formidable force, pushing both the DMK and AIADMK to the margins. The promise of 'economic protection and uncompromising security for women' by Vijay resonated more with voters than the AIADMK's offer of a refrigerator and saree for Deepavali. This shift indicates a changing political landscape in Tamil Nadu.

Leadership Under Threat

Since the passing of Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK has struggled to maintain unity and direction. The scale of this loss may embolden V K Sasikala and her nephew, T T V Dhinakaran, to renew attempts to reclaim the party. Palaniswami had reconciled with Dhinakaran to consolidate the Mukkulathor caste vote in the south, but the party could win only five of the 58 seats in that region. Sasikala's outfit and repeated accusations of Palaniswami's 'betrayal' hurt the AIADMK in these strongholds.

Alliance with BJP Backfires

After unsuccessful attempts to bring Vijay's TVK into its fold, the AIADMK eventually aligned with the BJP, despite having parted ways a year earlier. Palaniswami defended the tie-up, pointing to the DMK-BJP alliance during the Vajpayee era. However, the DMK and its allies framed the NDA as a 'New Delhi Alliance', accusing the AIADMK leadership of being subservient to the BJP under the weight of corruption charges and acting as a conduit for the saffron party's entry in Tamil Nadu. This made cadres from both parties uncomfortable working together.

Political Fallout

Palaniswami's support for the Modi government's delimitation bill also became politically awkward after the initiative was defeated in Parliament days before the poll. The AIADMK's position as one of the poles of Tamil Nadu politics is now under threat, with newer forces competing for the space. The party's traditional base is eroding, and its leadership faces internal challenges.
