The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured 15 seats in the urban local body elections in Gujarat, but failed to win a single seat in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), where it had won seven seats in the previous election held in 2021.
Seat Distribution
The AIMIM won three seats in the Bhuj urban local body, three seats in Sikka (Kamnagar), one seat in Sidhpur Taluka, three seats in Modasa, four seats in Bharuch, and one seat in the Borsad municipal body.
However, the performance of the Asaduddin Owaisi-led party in the 2026 polls declined compared to its victories in the 2021 elections. Despite Owaisi himself campaigning and the party fielding candidates from a large number of seats in municipal bodies across Gujarat, it could manage only 15 wins.
Comparison with 2021
In 2021, the AIMIM had won seven seats in the AMC, nine in Modasa, seven in Godhra, and three in Bharuch. But in the recent elections, the party faced a washout in the AMC elections, failing to win a single seat.
In 2021, the AIMIM made a strong debut with seven candidates winning, including three from Maktampura and four from Jamalpur. Although the party fielded 36 candidates in Muslim-dominated wards this time, voters rejected them, with several candidates losing their security deposits.
Party Response
AIMIM Gujarat state president Sabirbhai Kabliwala claimed that the results clearly reflect that AIMIM's message, its struggle for justice, and its voice for the marginalised sections of society continue to receive strong public support. He appealed to all AIMIM workers to remain united and continue working hard to solve people's problems.
