AINRC's Rangasamy Wins Mangalam, Defeats DMK by 7,050 Votes
AINRC's Rangasamy Wins Mangalam Seat in Puducherry

All India NR Congress (AINRC) chief N Rangasamy secured a decisive victory in the Mangalam constituency of Puducherry, defeating Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate S S Rangan by a margin of 7,050 votes. The contest turned Mangalam into a high-profile VVIP battleground after Rangasamy chose to contest here alongside his traditional stronghold in Thattanchavady.

Three-Way Contest

To counter Rangasamy's move, the DMK fielded SS Rangan, while MK Sathia represented the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a formidable third entrant. This transformed the election from a traditional two-way fight into a high-stakes three-way battle among the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA, led by AINRC and BJP), the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA, anchored by Congress and DMK), and the newly formed TVK-NMK alliance headed by actor-politician Vijay.

Historical Context

In the 2021 assembly elections, AINRC's C Djeacoumar won the seat by defeating DMK candidate Sun Kumaravel by 2,751 votes. In 2016, AINRC's SV Sugumaran secured victory over Kumaravel by a larger margin of 5,563 votes, indicating a narrowing gap in subsequent elections. Rangasamy's entry this year made Mangalam one of the most-watched constituencies in the union territory.

Record Voter Turnout

Following a trend of high voter engagement, Mangalam recorded a massive 94.14% voter turnout, exceeding the 89.2% in 2021. This mirrors the record-breaking participation across Puducherry, which saw a historic 91.23% turnout in the 2026 assembly elections held on April 9, with results declared on May 4.

Constituency Profile

Mangalam is a semi-urban constituency in southern Puducherry, characterized by residential localities, small businesses, and expanding civic infrastructure. The high turnout reflects the electorate's keen interest in the three-way contest.

The 2026 Puducherry assembly elections saw the TVK emerge as a formidable force in Tamil Nadu, while in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee lagged behind Suvendu Adhikari after the second round in Bhabanipur. The BJP aimed to oust Mamata in Bengal while retaining Assam.
