AIUDF Unveils First Candidate List for Assam Assembly Elections

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), under the leadership of perfume magnate Badruddin Ajmal, has officially released its inaugural list of nine candidates for the forthcoming Assam assembly elections. This strategic move comes as the party prepares to confront both the BJP-led coalition and the Congress-led alliance head-on, following its exclusion from both political camps.

Electoral Strategy and Seat Allocation

AIUDF is projected to contest approximately 25 out of the total 126 assembly seats in the upcoming election. Currently, the party holds 15 MLAs in the state assembly, making it the second-largest opposition group after Congress. The party's decision to field candidates independently marks a significant shift in Assam's political landscape.

On Monday evening, AIUDF confirmed the renomination of three sitting MLAs: Aminul Islam, Hafiz Rafiqul Islam, and Nizanur Rahman. However, recent constituency delimitation has necessitated changes to their electoral districts. Aminul Islam, who currently represents Dhing, will now contest from Rupahihat. Similarly, Hafiz Rafiqul Islam, the incumbent MLA from Jania, will stand for election in the newly established Mandia constituency. Nizanur Rahman will seek re-election from his current constituency of Gauripur.

New Candidates and Political Developments

The party has introduced several fresh faces in its candidate list, including two women candidates from lower Assam: Minakshi Rahman from Paka Betbari and Sabana Aktar from Bilasipara. In a notable political development, former All Assam Minorities Students Union president Rejaul Karim Sarkar received the party ticket for the newly created Srijangram constituency. Sarkar had briefly joined Congress but resigned shortly afterward and subsequently gained endorsement from AIUDF.

Additional nominations include former MLA Abu Taher Bepari from Parbatjhora, Matiur Rahman from Dhing, and Siddique Ahmed from Laharighat. These selections reflect AIUDF's efforts to strengthen its presence across various regions of Assam.

Political Rivalries and Accusations

AIUDF's relationship with Congress has deteriorated significantly since their alliance in the 2021 assembly election, which ended in defeat. Party leader Badruddin Ajmal launched a fresh attack on Congress, labeling it as "BJP's A team" and accusing Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain of damaging the party's prospects. Ajmal alleged that Hussain had confined Congress primarily to minority-inhabited areas, effectively turning it into a "Muslim League."

Ajmal further criticized Congress for losing credibility in its traditional stronghold of upper Assam and for aligning with the regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad to safeguard its electoral prospects in that region. These statements underscore the deepening rift between the two opposition forces as election preparations intensify.

The AIUDF's decision to contest independently signals a potentially fragmented opposition landscape in Assam, which could influence voter dynamics and election outcomes. Political analysts are closely monitoring how this development will affect the strategies of both the BJP-led alliance and the Congress-led coalition in the upcoming polls.
