Preparations for the highly anticipated elections to the 19-ward Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) have been finalized, with the crucial 48-hour silent period officially beginning on Sunday. State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana confirmed that all logistical arrangements are complete for the civic polls scheduled for Tuesday.
Strict Campaign Restrictions Enforced During Silent Period
Commissioner Lalthlangliana emphasized that political parties, candidates, and their campaigners must strictly refrain from any form of canvassing from 5 PM on Sunday until 5 PM on Tuesday. This mandatory silent period precedes the polling process, which is set to commence at 7 AM on Tuesday across the state capital's electoral landscape.
Substantial Electorate to Determine Civic Leadership
An impressive electorate of 2,37,846 registered voters will exercise their democratic rights to determine the political future of 68 candidates contesting across 257 carefully established polling stations. The voter demographic reveals a notable gender distribution, with 1,28,470 female voters and 1,09,376 male voters eligible to participate in this significant civic exercise.
Gender Representation in Ward Reservations and Candidacy
Of the 19 municipal wards comprising the Aizawl Municipal Corporation, six wards have been specifically reserved for women candidates, ensuring enhanced female representation in local governance. Additionally, seven women candidates are actively contesting in five general wards, competing directly against male counterparts in what promises to be a closely watched electoral battle.
Mizoram SEC Clears Six Politicians of MCC Violation Charges
In a significant pre-election development, the Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) has formally exonerated three state ministers, one Member of Parliament, one Member of Legislative Assembly, and a ZPM corporator candidate who faced allegations of violating the Election Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The commission cited a critical lack of credible evidence to substantiate the serious allegations against these prominent political figures.
The commission issued an official statement on Saturday detailing that allegations had been brought against Agriculture Minister PC Vanlalruata, LAD Minister C Lalsawivunga, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B Lalchhanzova, Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, Chief Minister's Adviser Lalmuanpuia Punte, and ZPM Corporator Candidate K Lalrodinga.
Due Process Followed in Investigation of Allegations
The SEC confirmed that formal showcause notices were properly served to all six individuals, who subsequently submitted comprehensive written explanations addressing the allegations against them. The complainants—H Lalmuankima, Secretary of the MPCC Legal Cell, and Lalbiakkima, Joint Secretary of the MNF Legal Board—were also formally requested to furnish supporting evidence to substantiate their allegations.
Following a meticulous and detailed examination of all submitted responses, formal complaints, and available evidentiary materials, the commission concluded that the allegations could not be sufficiently established, leading to the exoneration of all six political figures.
This development comes as the city of Aizawl prepares for a peaceful and orderly civic election process, with election authorities emphasizing strict adherence to electoral guidelines and protocols throughout the voting period.
