Assam AJP Candidate Faces Police Questioning Over Poll Code Violation Allegations
Guwahati witnessed significant political developments as Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury, aged 27, presented herself before authorities at Panbazar police station on Sunday. The young political figure was subjected to detailed interrogation concerning a registered case that alleges violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the crucial polling day on April 9.
Legal Notice and Arrest Threats Precede Questioning
Chowdhury had been formally served an official notice on Saturday, which explicitly instructed her to appear before the police on the following day. The document contained stern language, warning that failure to comply would render her liable for immediate arrest under the provisions of the law.
Advocate Santanu Borthakur, representing Chowdhury, addressed the media following the questioning session. He emphasized that all charges mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) are categorically bailable offenses, which legally prevents authorities from arresting the candidate. "The charges outlined are not serious in nature whatsoever," Borthakur stated firmly. "The summons was deliberately issued with intimidating language specifically designed to harass her. Kunki contested the elections and successfully established a powerful narrative across the entire state, which proved damaging to the BJP's interests. Consequently, this politically motivated case was filed against her."
Deep Fake Video Complaint and Political Controversies
During the police interaction, Advocate Borthakur also inquired about the current progress regarding a separate complaint filed by Kunki Chowdhury. This complaint concerns a malicious deep fake video that was allegedly created and propagated by members of the BJP's IT cell. The legal representative sought clarification on why no arrests have been made in that particular matter despite the formal complaint being lodged.
Kunki Chowdhury has recently found herself at the epicenter of multiple political controversies. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously threatened legal action against her parents over unsubstantiated allegations of beef consumption, which Chowdhury vehemently dismissed as completely baseless and politically motivated attacks.
AJP Leadership Condemns Police Action as Democratic Repression
The Assam Jatiya Parishad launched a strong condemnation against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following the police summons issued to their candidate. Party officials claimed that the ruling BJP has become visibly rattled after realizing that the electoral mandate in the constituency has shifted against them.
AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi expressed profound disappointment, describing the summoning of Kunki Chowdhury as "both shocking and unfortunate." He elaborated further, stating, "This incident represents not merely administrative pressure on a political candidate, but serves as a burning example of BJP's systematic repression of democratic principles in Assam. The Chief Minister and his party have begun utilizing state administration and police machinery for narrow political gains, which establishes a dangerously alarming precedent for our democratic system."
Gogoi posed critical questions regarding the perceived bias in law enforcement actions. "Our fundamental question remains unanswered: why have BJP supporters who published and circulated the deep-fake video not been arrested yet, despite Kunki filing an official complaint? Why is Assam Police demonstrating such clearly biased behavior in these matters?"
The AJP president concluded with a powerful declaration of resistance. "The people of Assam will never accept BJP's political thuggery and intimidation tactics. Ultimately, democracy, justice, and constitutional rights will always triumph over such authoritarian tendencies."
