Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday sidestepped a direct question about a possible alliance with the Congress party for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, sparking speculation about growing fissures within the opposition INDIA bloc. When asked by reporters in Lucknow whether the SP and Congress would contest the upcoming state polls together, Yadav said, "We are focused on strengthening the party and exposing the BJP's failures. Alliances are decided at the right time."
Background of the Alliance Question
The query came amid reports that the Congress is keen on contesting a significant number of seats in Uttar Pradesh, a state that sends the highest number of lawmakers to the Lok Sabha. The two parties had fought the 2024 general elections in alliance as part of the INDIA bloc, with the SP winning 37 seats and the Congress securing 6 seats in the state. However, tensions have emerged over seat-sharing for the 2027 assembly polls, with the SP reportedly reluctant to cede many seats to its junior partner.
Akhilesh's Evasive Response
Yadav's refusal to commit to an alliance with Congress is seen as a strategic move to keep his options open. He emphasized that the SP's primary goal is to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state, but did not rule out going solo. "We will contest elections on our own strength and later decide on post-poll alliances if needed," he added, signaling a potential departure from the pre-poll pact model.
Reactions from Political Analysts
Political observers note that the SP's hesitation stems from the 2022 assembly election results, where the Congress managed to win only 2 seats despite contesting 403 seats in alliance. "The SP believes that aligning with Congress may not add much value in terms of seats, while it could alienate its core voter base," said analyst Dr. Rajesh Pandey. However, a complete breakup could weaken the INDIA bloc's narrative against the BJP ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Congress's Stance
Meanwhile, the Congress party has publicly expressed confidence in the alliance. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai stated, "Our alliance with the SP is strong and will continue for the 2027 polls. We are discussing seat-sharing amicably." Despite this, Akhilesh's comments suggest internal discord, as the SP has been increasingly assertive about its dominance in state politics.
Impact on INDIA Bloc Unity
The development comes at a time when the INDIA bloc is already facing challenges in other states, such as Punjab and West Bengal, where regional allies have shown signs of discontent. The bloc, formed in 2023 to take on the BJP, has struggled to maintain cohesion amid differing regional ambitions. If the SP and Congress fail to reach an agreement in Uttar Pradesh, it could set a precedent for other states, potentially unraveling the coalition before the next national election.
What Lies Ahead
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections still two years away, both parties have time to negotiate. However, Akhilesh's evasive remarks indicate that the SP is in no hurry to commit, preferring to assess the political landscape. The BJP, on the other hand, is closely watching these developments, hoping to exploit any divisions in the opposition camp. For now, the fate of the INDIA bloc in India's most politically crucial state remains uncertain.
