All 68 Aizawl Municipal Corporation Candidates Cleared for April 21 Civic Polls
In a significant development for Mizoram's local governance, all 68 candidates who submitted nominations for the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections have been declared valid following official scrutiny. State Election Commissioner H Lalthlangliana made this announcement on Saturday, confirming that the electoral process is proceeding smoothly without any disqualifications at this stage.
Four-Party Contest with Major Political Players
The civic polls are shaping up as a four-party contest, with the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), the Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) fielding candidates in all 19 wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated candidates in 11 wards, making this a comprehensive political battle across the municipal landscape.
Political analysts anticipate the main electoral competition will unfold between the ZPM, MNF, and MPCC, with these three parties expected to dominate the political discourse in the lead-up to polling day. Notably, there are no independent candidates in the fray, making this a purely party-based contest.
Women's Representation and Electoral Infrastructure
Of the 19 municipal wards, six are specifically reserved for women candidates, ensuring gender representation in the civic body. Additionally, five women candidates are contesting in general wards against male opponents, potentially increasing female participation in municipal governance.
The electoral infrastructure is being prepared with 40 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and requisitioned from the Election Commission of India. BEL engineers will conduct thorough testing of all machines before deployment to ensure seamless voting operations on election day.
Voter Demographics and Polling Arrangements
An impressive electorate of 237,846 voters is eligible to participate in these crucial municipal elections. The voter breakdown reveals 128,470 female voters and 109,376 male voters, indicating a higher female voter registration that could influence electoral outcomes.
A total of 257 polling stations will be established across Aizawl to accommodate this substantial voter base. Election authorities have confirmed that auxiliary polling stations will be arranged if required to ensure accessibility and convenience for all voters.
Key Dates and Withdrawal Deadline
Polling for the 19-ward Aizawl Municipal Corporation is officially scheduled for April 21. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is Monday, with the deadline set for 3 pm. This provides candidates a final opportunity to reconsider their participation before the ballot papers are finalized.
The scrutiny process has concluded without any candidate rejections, setting the stage for a competitive democratic exercise that will determine Aizawl's municipal leadership for the coming term. All political parties are now expected to intensify their campaigning efforts as the election date approaches.
