Former Punjab CM Revives Alliance Talks for 2027 Elections
In a significant political development, former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has reignited discussions about a potential reunion between the Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the crucial 2027 Assembly elections. The veteran BJP leader asserted that an alliance between the two parties represents the only viable path to forming a government in Punjab.
'No Other Way to Form Government'
During a recent podcast interview with a media house that aired on Sunday, Captain Amarinder Singh delivered a candid assessment of the BJP's prospects in Punjab. The former chief minister argued that the BJP lacks sufficient understanding of Punjab's unique political landscape to build a strong organizational base independently. He emphasized that developing such grassroots strength would require "two to three elections" for the party to accomplish on its own.
"There is no other way to form the Government than by having an alliance with the Akali Dal," Singh stated unequivocally. He highlighted that only a partnership with SAD could provide the necessary cadre support and grassroots network essential for electoral success in the state.
Consistent Stance on Alliance Politics
This isn't the first time Captain Amarinder Singh has advocated for reviving the SAD-BJP partnership. In February 2024, he publicly declared that such an alliance "would benefit both the parties," indicating his consistent position on this strategic political move. His latest comments reinforce his long-standing view that the old coalition model remains the most practical approach for the BJP in Punjab.
The former chief minister also used the platform to address questions about his political future, confirming that he remains "fit and active" and is fully engaged in preparations for the 2027 Assembly polls.
Growing Consensus Within BJP Ranks
Captain Amarinder Singh's remarks align with similar sentiments expressed by other senior BJP leaders in Punjab. In March 2024, state BJP president Sunil Jakhar acknowledged that an SAD-BJP alliance reflected "the emotion of the masses," though he clarified that no formal proposal had been submitted to the party high command at that time.
The push for reunion gained further momentum in July 2025 when Jakhar took a stronger position, describing a renewed alliance with SAD as "essential" for ensuring political stability in Punjab. He argued that revisiting the partnership could effectively counter what he characterized as "anti-Punjab forces" and urged both parties to move beyond past disagreements for the greater good of the state.
Sources within the BJP indicate that recent electoral setbacks in bypolls have intensified internal discussions about the necessity of reestablishing the alliance with SAD. A senior BJP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that ground-level voices are increasingly advocating for fresh dialogue about the partnership.
The SAD and BJP had maintained their political alliance for nearly 27 years before it dissolved in September 2020 following Parliament's passage of three farm laws that were subsequently repealed. The potential revival of this long-standing partnership could significantly reshape Punjab's political dynamics as the state approaches the 2027 Assembly elections.
