AMC Greenlights Massive Rs 2,500 Crore Development Push in Final Pre-Term Meeting

In a significant move just days before its five-year term concludes, the standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a comprehensive package of development works valued at approximately Rs 2,500 crore. This substantial allocation represents nearly 25% of the civic body's annual budgeted works, marking one of the largest project approvals in recent municipal history.

Infrastructure Projects Spanning Multiple Sectors

The committee, meeting for the final time before the current elected wing's term ends on March 10, cleared a wide array of proposals covering critical urban infrastructure. These include major initiatives in road construction, bridge development, drainage systems, water supply networks, civic facilities, and urban beautification projects.

Standing committee chairman Devang Dani emphasized the strategic importance of these approvals, particularly with Ahmedabad's preparation for hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030. "Key infrastructure projects have been approved to ensure quality development at a faster pace," Dani stated during the meeting.

Major Project Highlights and Allocations

The approved projects feature several high-value initiatives:

  • Road works worth Rs 600 crore across various city sectors
  • Development of Lotus Park in South Bopal with an estimated budget of Rs 115 crore
  • Allocation of Rs 250 crore for development and maintenance of public buildings, heritage structures, and temples, including specific works at Gujarat University and LD Engineering College
  • Modernization of AMC's CCRS grievance redressal system through an AI-based complaint management app that will allow citizens to upload photographs documenting civic work progress
  • Development of 25 additional traffic junctions to improve urban mobility
  • Construction of community halls, urban health centers, bridges, and footpaths across multiple city wards

Political Controversy and Opposition Criticism

The timing and scale of these approvals have drawn criticism from opposition leaders. Shehzad Khan Pathan, Leader of Opposition in AMC, raised concerns about the rushed nature of the approvals, suggesting they were pushed through "in haste just days before the elected body's term ends."

Pathan further alleged that "the hurried approvals raise suspicion and appear to benefit contractors," questioning the transparency and timing of such massive project clearances during the final days of the current administration's tenure.

Despite these criticisms, committee officials maintain that the projects are essential for Ahmedabad's continued urban development and preparation for major international events like the Commonwealth Games. The approvals represent what municipal authorities describe as a strategic investment in the city's future infrastructure needs.
