A government school in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, has been renamed after Adil Hussain Shah, a young man who lost his life while saving tourists during a terrorist attack in Pahalgam in 2023. The decision was taken by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to honor his bravery and sacrifice.
Details of the Renaming
The school, previously known as Government High School in the Kulgam area of Anantnag, will now be called 'Shaheed Adil Hussain Shah Memorial High School'. The renaming ceremony was held on Wednesday, attended by local officials, family members of the deceased, and community leaders.
Adil Hussain Shah, a 24-year-old resident of Anantnag, was working as a taxi driver when he encountered the attackers. He shielded tourists from gunfire, allowing them to escape before succumbing to his injuries. His act of valor was widely praised across the nation.

The school will also feature a plaque detailing Shah's heroic actions, and an annual award in his name will be instituted for students demonstrating bravery.
Community Reaction
Local residents and educators welcomed the move. 'This is a fitting tribute to a true hero. His memory will live on through the students who study here,' said a teacher at the school.
Shah's family expressed gratitude, with his father stating, 'We are proud of our son's sacrifice. This recognition ensures his legacy continues.'
Background of the Attack
In June 2023, terrorists attacked a tourist bus in Pahalgam, killing several people. Adil Hussain Shah, who was nearby, rushed to help the tourists and was fatally shot. He posthumously received the Shaurya Chakra, one of India's highest gallantry awards.
The renaming of the school is part of broader efforts to honor local heroes and promote a culture of bravery and service among youth.
