Former BJP Leader Annamalai Condemns Tamil Nadu Government Over Delayed Police Action
Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai launched a scathing attack on the Tamil Nadu government on Monday, accusing it of deliberate delay in taking action against the commandant of the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion in Coimbatore. The officer stands accused of sexually harassing a woman police officer, a case that has sparked widespread outrage.
Allegations of Government Protection and Planned Statewide Protests
Addressing reporters in Karur, Annamalai asserted that the state government had been actively "saving" the accused officer from consequences. He revealed that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) party leaders will organize and carry out protests across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, demonstrating against what they perceive as the government's failure to ensure justice.
"The 45-year-old police officer was sexually harassed in October 2025, but decisive action only materialized in March," Annamalai stated emphatically. "The arrest occurred solely after the victim filed a formal complaint at the police station, highlighting the complete lack of initial action. This incident serves as a stark example of how the Tamil Nadu police force has deteriorated under DMK rule."
He further questioned the government's commitment to public safety, adding, "If the government cannot protect a lady police officer, how will they ever protect common citizens?"
Reference to Karur Stampede and Criticism of Senthil Balaji
During his press interaction, Annamalai also targeted DMK leader and former minister Senthil Balaji, claiming he has brought disrepute to Karur. Annamalai referenced the CBI summons issued to Balaji concerning the tragic Karur stampede that resulted in 41 fatalities.
"Senthil Balaji is evidently rattled by the CBI summons related to the Karur stampede," Annamalai alleged. "Following the incident, M R Vijayabhaskar was the first to arrive at the scene without any publicity or advertisement. In contrast, Senthil Balaji arrived with ten ambulances adorned with stickers of the DMK medical wing, accompanied by live media coverage designed to project him as the first responder."
He expressed confidence that the ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe would uncover the truth behind these actions and the overall handling of the stampede case.
Broader Political Context and Implications
This criticism from the prominent BJP leader underscores the escalating political tensions in Tamil Nadu. The allegations of delayed justice in the police harassment case, coupled with references to the Karur stampede investigation, position these issues as central points of contention between the ruling DMK and the opposition NDA.
The announced statewide protests signal a coordinated political strategy to hold the government accountable on matters of law enforcement integrity and administrative responsiveness. The developments are being closely watched as they reflect on governance, women's safety, and political accountability in the state.
