Andhra Pradesh Minister Pushes for Accelerated National Highway Development
In a significant move to enhance infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh's Roads and Buildings Minister, B C Janardhan Reddy, has called upon the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to expedite the approval and execution of crucial National Highway (NH) projects across the state. During a high-level meeting in New Delhi, the minister emphasized that coordinated efforts between the NDA government at the Centre and the coalition government in Andhra Pradesh are proving instrumental in accelerating highway development, fostering better connectivity and economic growth.
Key Requests and Proposals Presented to MoRTH
Accompanied by R&B Special Chief Secretary M T Krishnababu, Minister Janardhan Reddy met with MoRTH Secretary Umashankar T to discuss pending issues and new proposals. The minister specifically sought early clearances for various projects and a speedy resolution of obstacles related to land acquisition, forest permissions, and revenue disputes. To underscore the state's commitment, he presented a Tirumala Venkateswara Swamy idol to the Secretary, symbolizing a request for continued support in expanding NH infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.
Highlighting Andhra Pradesh's proactive approach, Janardhan Reddy noted that the state has established a dedicated task force—a unique initiative not seen elsewhere in the country—to fast-track the resolution of bottlenecks affecting NH projects and ensure their time-bound execution. This task force aims to streamline processes and eliminate delays, setting a benchmark for other states.
Major NH Projects Flagged for Priority Implementation
The minister outlined several key projects that require urgent attention during the 2025-26 period. These include:
- Four-laning of the Akiveedu-Digamarru stretch on NH-165.
- Upgrading the Amalapuram-Ravulapalem section on NH-216.
- Enhancing the Pedana-Lakshmipuram corridor on NH-216H.
- Improving the Mudigubba-Kadiri route on NH-42.
Additionally, Janardhan Reddy sought approvals for upgrades on NH-365BB, NH-716, and NH-544D, the construction of a four-lane tunnel on the Kadapa-Rayachoti section of NH-40, and the development of the Chittoor bypass. He also requested approval for widening the two-lane road at Banaganapalle in Nandyal district to four lanes, with an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore, to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety.
Positive Response from MoRTH and Expected Benefits
MoRTH Secretary Umashankar T responded positively to the proposals, assuring support on pending approvals and expressing willingness to collaborate on expediting these projects. Minister Janardhan Reddy emphasized that the successful implementation of these NH initiatives would significantly ease traffic flow, enhance connectivity between urban and rural areas, and spur regional development by boosting trade and tourism.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including AP Bhavan Resident Commissioner Praveen Kumar, MoRTH Regional Officer Harikrishna, and other senior representatives, underscoring the importance of this collaborative effort. This engagement reflects a shared vision between the state and central governments to transform Andhra Pradesh's transportation network, driving progress and prosperity across the region.
