Arunachal Government Vows to Revitalize Cooperative Sector
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reaffirmed the state government's determination to transform the cooperative movement into a more effective and meaningful force for development. The commitment came during his participation in the Golden Jubilee celebration valediction event of the Arunachal Pradesh State Cooperative Union (APSCU) held in Itanagar on Thursday.
Comprehensive Support for Cooperative Revival
Addressing the gathering at the event themed "Strengthening the Cooperative Movement in Arunachal Pradesh," Khandu assured complete government backing for the revitalization of cooperatives across the state. The Chief Minister announced that his administration would work closely with APSCU to implement crucial reforms and infrastructure development projects aimed at boosting the cooperative ecosystem.
Khandu expressed appreciation for the dedicated service rendered by members, functionaries, and stakeholders of APSCU since its establishment in 1975. He traced the organization's remarkable journey, which began in 1969 during the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) era and has since evolved into an extensive network comprising 1,449 cooperative societies with more than 2.2 lakh members actively engaged in agriculture, handloom, dairy, artisanal sectors, and various rural enterprises.
Ground Reality Assessment and Challenges
The Chief Minister particularly praised the unprecedented 27-district revival tour undertaken by APSCU chairman and his team between December 2024 and April 2025. During this extensive outreach effort, the team interacted with over 87,500 cooperative members and 1,500 LAMPS/PACS units, gaining firsthand insights into the ground realities facing the cooperative sector.
This comprehensive assessment revealed several critical gaps hindering the growth of cooperatives, including:
- Lack of awareness about cooperative principles among members
- Inadequate infrastructure in 26 district unions
- Absence of cooperative banking services in many areas
While acknowledging these challenges, Khandu noted that due to the model code of conduct currently in force for local body elections, he couldn't make immediate public announcements. However, he gave a firm assurance that the requests outlined in a memorandum submitted by APSCU would receive positive consideration from the government once the election process concludes.
Pathway to Self-Reliant Arunachal
Emphasizing the strategic importance of cooperatives, the Chief Minister stated that strengthening this sector is central to achieving AtmaNirbhar Arunachal (self-reliant Arunachal). He outlined his vision for APSCU to evolve into an autonomous and professional apex institution capable of guiding policies, ensuring transparency, empowering women and youth, and creating sustainable rural wealth.
To realize this vision, Khandu stressed the necessity of proper training at all levels, comprehensive market research, and genuine commitment from members. He also shared information about a high-level task force established under the Department of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) focused on attaining self-reliance in milk, egg, fish, and meat products across the northeast region.
A robust five-year plan is currently being developed with targets extending until 2030, signaling the government's long-term commitment to transforming the cooperative landscape and driving sustainable economic growth in Arunachal Pradesh.
