Assam 2026 Polls: Gogoi vs Sarma in Jorhat, Jalukbari

2026 Assam Assembly Elections: A Defining Political Battle Takes Shape

The 2026 Assam Assembly elections are emerging as a pivotal political confrontation, characterized by a clash between seasoned experience and rising leadership, as well as established legacies and fresh momentum. This electoral showdown is centered on two critical constituencies: Jorhat, where Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has elevated the race to a prestige battle, and Jalukbari, the enduring stronghold of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The broader electoral landscape will witness the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party, Asom Gana Parishad, and Bodoland People's Front, striving for a third consecutive term in the 126-member Assembly. Conversely, the Indian National Congress aims to reclaim power after a decade in opposition, marking a significant comeback attempt.

Jalukbari: Sarma's Fortress Confronts New Challenges

Jalukbari, located in Kamrup district, remains one of the most intensely monitored seats, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pursuing re-election from a constituency he has controlled for nearly 25 years. Since 2001, when he defeated AGP leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, Sarma has cultivated a formidable political foundation.

In the upcoming 2026 elections, Sarma faces Congress candidate Bidisha Neog and independent contender Dipika Das. Despite these challenges, Sarma enters the contest with a robust track record and historically overwhelming victory margins.

During the 2021 Assembly elections, Sarma achieved a landslide victory with 1,30,762 votes, representing 78.4% of the vote share. He outperformed Congress candidate Romen Chandra Borthakur, who garnered 28,851 votes (17.3%), while independent candidates lagged significantly behind. The victory margin was an impressive 1,01,911 votes.

Following the 2023 delimitation, the constituency now comprises 2,10,624 voters distributed across 247 polling stations. With a blend of urban and semi-urban populations, Jalukbari retains its political significance and continues to reflect Sarma's dominant influence.

Sarma, aged 57 and holding a doctorate, has declared assets exceeding Rs 35 lakh. His primary challenger, Bidisha Neog, 34, is a graduate with assets around Rs 34.6 lakh, while independent candidate Dipika Das, 44, a postgraduate, has declared assets worth Rs 5.2 lakh.

Jorhat: Gogoi Transforms the 'Tea Capital' into a Political Battleground

While Jalukbari symbolizes continuity, Jorhat represents disruption. Once a colonial administrative center and now renowned as Assam's "tea capital," this constituency has become the epicenter of the state's political struggle.

Gaurav Gogoi's decision to contest here has transformed Jorhat into a high-stakes arena. As the son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and the sitting Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, Gogoi's entry has infused fresh energy into the Congress campaign, elevating the contest beyond a routine electoral fight.

He confronts BJP's sitting MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, who has held the seat since 2016 and maintains strong grassroots support. Goswami's established network positions him as a formidable opponent, but Gogoi's presence has turned the contest into a tightly contested battle with no clear frontrunner.

Jorhat's electoral dynamics are shaped by its unique social composition. Tea garden communities play a vital role, alongside a significant Ahom Hindu population and Assamese-speaking voters. This diverse mix renders the constituency politically sensitive and decisive in Upper Assam.

Under the BJP government, Jorhat has witnessed visible infrastructure enhancements, including new flyovers and healthcare facility upgrades. However, persistent local issues continue to influence voter sentiment.

The recent delimitation exercise has further altered the electoral landscape, with changes in voter composition across urban and rural areas. Urban pockets are anticipated to experience a tight contest, while rural areas may favor Goswami due to his longstanding presence. Simultaneously, younger voters could emerge as a decisive factor, with many potentially supporting Gogoi.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, out of 1,76,834 electors, Goswami secured 68,321 votes, defeating Congress candidate Rana Goswami by a margin of 6,488 votes. In 2016, the margin was wider, with Goswami winning by 13,638 votes, securing 69,209 votes against Rana Goswami's 55,571. These results underscore the constituency's competitive nature and suggest another closely fought contest in 2026.

State-Level Dynamics and Electoral Stakes

At the state level, the BJP-led NDA enters the election from a position of strength. In 2021, the BJP secured 60 seats with a 33.21% vote share, while the Congress won 29 seats with 29.67% of the votes.

The NDA is relying on governance achievements, development initiatives, and leadership continuity to secure a third consecutive term. In contrast, the Congress is attempting to leverage anti-incumbency sentiments and local issues, with leaders like Gogoi leading its campaign.

With high stakes for both the NDA and the Congress, the outcome will not only determine the next government but also shape the future trajectory of politics in Assam. Polling for all 126 constituencies will be conducted in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
