Election Commission Sets April 9 as Voting Date for Assam Assembly Polls

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India officially announced the schedule for the upcoming Assam assembly elections on Sunday. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar revealed that voting for the 126-member legislative assembly will be conducted in a single phase on April 9, 2024, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4, 2024.

Streamlined Election Process with Reduced Phases

This announcement coincides with the approaching deadline for filing appeals against the final electoral roll for West Bengal, which was published on February 28 and includes over 6.4 crore registered voters. Election officials have indicated that the forthcoming assembly elections across multiple states are likely to be held in fewer phases compared to the 2021 polls.

During the previous election cycle, West Bengal witnessed voting across eight distinct phases, while Assam conducted its elections in three separate phases. In contrast, the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, along with the union territory of Puducherry, completed their polling in just one phase each.

High-Stakes Political Battle in Assam

The electoral contest in Assam is anticipated to be a closely monitored affair, drawing significant national attention. Himanta Biswa Sarma of the Bharatiya Janata Party is vying for a third consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Assam, seeking to consolidate the party's position in the northeastern state.

On the opposition front, the Indian National Congress is striving to reclaim its political foothold in Assam, with state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi spearheading the campaign efforts. The party has proactively released two candidate lists for the assembly elections, announcing a total of 65 nominees so far.

  • The Congress party's second list featured 23 candidates, including prominent figures such as Abdul Khaleque, Rakibuddin Ahmed, and Bipul Gogoi.
  • Additionally, the party has reserved 15 constituencies for its alliance partners under a pre-arranged seat-sharing agreement.
  • The initial list from the Congress included 42 candidates, highlighting key leaders like state chief Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia from Nazira, and sitting MLAs Nandita Das from Hajo-Sualkuchi and Diganta Barman from Barkhetri.

Other Political Players and Previous Electoral Performance

The All India United Democratic Front, under the leadership of Badruddin Ajmal, has also entered the fray by releasing its first list of nine candidates. The party is expected to contest approximately 25 out of the 126 assembly seats in Assam.

Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet disclosed its official candidate list for the upcoming polls. In the 2021 assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance coalition—comprising the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad, and United People's Party Liberal—secured a total of 75 seats. The BJP emerged as the largest partner within the alliance, winning 60 seats independently.

The Election Commission's streamlined single-phase polling for Assam marks a significant shift from previous years, potentially enhancing logistical efficiency and voter accessibility. Political analysts are closely observing the strategies of major parties as they prepare for a competitive electoral battle that could influence regional and national political dynamics.
