Assam BJP Condemns West Bengal Government Over Alleged Disrespect to President
Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp criticism against the West Bengal government, accusing it of showing disrespect to the President of India by allegedly changing the venue of an international Santhal conclave at the last minute. The conclave was scheduled to be attended by President Droupadi Murmu on March 7.
BJP Spokesperson Highlights Constitutional Concerns
BJP state spokesperson Mita N Bora expressed deep concern over the developments surrounding the President's visit to West Bengal. "The BJP expresses deep concern over the developments surrounding the President's recent visit to West Bengal on March 7 to attend the 9th International Santhal Conclave," Bora stated emphatically.
She emphasized that disrespect shown to the President constitutes disrespect toward India's democratic framework and constitutional values. "Disrespect to the President was a disrespect towards India's democracy," Bora declared, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Alleged Protocol Violations During Presidential Visit
According to Bora, equally troubling was the reported breach of established protocol during the President's visit to the state. "As per long-standing constitutional conventions, when the President visits a state, the Chief Minister or senior representatives of the state government formally receive the President," she explained.
"In this instance, no senior leadership from the state was present to receive her," Bora added, pointing out what she described as a significant departure from traditional diplomatic and constitutional norms.
Importance of the Santhal Conclave
The spokesperson elaborated on the significance of the conference, describing it as an important platform that brought together members of the Santhal community and representatives from different regions. The conclave aimed to deliberate on crucial issues related to tribal welfare, cultural preservation, and the future aspirations of the community.
"The Santhal community is one of the largest tribal communities in India, with more than 7 million people across the country and over 2.5 million residing in West Bengal," Bora noted, underscoring the demographic importance of the event.
Timing Adds to the Controversy
Bora condemned the manner in which the visit of the President was handled by the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She pointed out that the incident occurred just ahead of International Women's Day, adding another layer of significance to the controversy.
"The incident becomes even more unfortunate as it occurred just ahead of International Women's Day, a day that celebrates the achievements, dignity, and empowerment of women," Bora remarked.
She further highlighted President Murmu's unique position, stating, "The President is not only the constitutional head of the nation but also the first tribal woman to occupy this highest office, representing the aspirations and pride of millions of people across the country."
Call for Respecting Constitutional Dignity
In her concluding remarks, Bora reiterated the BJP's stance that the dignity of constitutional offices and the principles of democratic conduct must always be respected. "The dignity of constitutional offices and the principles of democratic conduct must be respected always, and any action that undermines these values must be addressed with seriousness," she asserted.
The Assam BJP's criticism adds to the ongoing political tensions between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government, highlighting concerns about protocol adherence and respect for constitutional positions in Indian democracy.
