In a significant move aimed at accelerating development and welfare initiatives, the Assam state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced a series of crucial decisions during its meeting on Thursday. The approvals span across financial allocations for autonomous councils, environmental conservation, national security infrastructure, land rights, and major industrial projects, marking a comprehensive push for progress in the state.
Major Financial Boost and Environmental Conservation
The cabinet gave its formal approval for the release of a substantial sum of Rs 250 crore to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). This funding is allocated under the State-Owned Priority Development Fund (Rural) for the upcoming financial year 2025–26. The allocation is expected to fuel rural infrastructure and development projects within the BTC-administered areas.
In a parallel decision underscoring the government's commitment to preserving ecological treasures, the cabinet moved to protect two vital wetlands in Goalpara district. Both Kumari Beel, spanning 270 hectares, and Dhamar Beel, covering 337 hectares, have been officially declared as Proposed Reserved Forests (PRFs). This designation, made under the historic Assam Forest Regulation of 1891, is a critical step towards the long-term conservation of biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems in the region.
Strengthening Security and Honouring Sporting Excellence
To bolster national security infrastructure in the state, the cabinet cleared the transfer of 607 bighas of government land located at Kareng Chapori in Dhemaji district. This land will be utilized for the construction of a new Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) group centre, enhancing the operational capacity of the paramilitary force in the northeastern region.
In a heartening gesture celebrating sporting achievement, the cabinet decided to honour Simu Das, a key member of the triumphant Indian women’s blind cricket team that won the Women’s T20 Blind World Cup. As a mark of recognition and to inspire future generations, Das will be appointed as a physical instructor under the directorate of sports and youth welfare.
Land Rights and Industrial Project Advance
Furthering its commitment to providing secure land rights to citizens, the government, under the ambit of Mission Basundhara, cleared land allotments for 308 families. This initiative is a cornerstone of the administration's policy to address historical land issues and ensure tenure security.
In a major boost to the state's industrial landscape, the cabinet also approved the allotment of land required for the upcoming ammonia-urea fertilizer project. The project is set to receive a significant push with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to lay its foundation stone on December 21. This project is anticipated to boost the agricultural sector and create numerous employment opportunities.
The array of decisions taken in this single cabinet meeting reflects a multi-pronged strategy focusing on regional development, environmental stewardship, security, social justice, and economic growth, setting a proactive agenda for Assam's future.
