Assam CM: NDA Seat-Sharing Final Before Poll Schedule

Assam CM Sarma Announces NDA Coalition Finalization Timeline

In a significant political development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on Tuesday that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners will take the final decision regarding their coalition for the upcoming state assembly elections before the official poll schedule is announced. This announcement comes as the opposition Congress and its allies continue protracted seat-sharing discussions without reaching a conclusive agreement.

Seat-Sharing Progress and Opposition Challenges

Speaking to reporters in Bokajan, located within the Karbi Anglong district, Chief Minister Sarma revealed that discussions among like-minded political parties are progressing smoothly. He confidently stated that all NDA candidates will be finalized by mid-March, providing a clear timeline for the alliance's preparation. Meanwhile, the opposition Congress and its partners face ongoing challenges in their seat-sharing negotiations, primarily due to several opposition parties demanding a larger share of constituencies.

Sarma expressed strong confidence in the BJP's electoral prospects, claiming during an event in Marioni that the opposition has "no existence" in approximately 90 to 95 of Assam's 126 legislative assembly seats. He emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is unstoppable in the forthcoming election and will comfortably form the government, showcasing the ruling party's assertive stance.

Alliance Dynamics and Candidate Speculation

In Assam, the BJP currently maintains alliances with key regional partners, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Bodoland People’s Front. These coalition dynamics are crucial for the NDA's strategy in the diverse state. Regarding specific candidates, Sarma mentioned that former Assam Congress leader Bhupen Borah will receive a ticket from either the Bihpuria or Ranganadi constituency, indicating strategic candidate placement.

On the opposition front, the All Parties Hill Leaders’ Conference (APHLC), led by retired IAS officer JI Kathar, might secure a couple of seats in the Karbi Anglong region under an opposition seat-sharing arrangement. However, Chief Minister Sarma dismissed this possibility, asserting that the APHLC and its partners will face defeat in the hill district, highlighting the competitive political landscape.

The Chief Minister's statements underscore the NDA's organized approach and the opposition's fragmented efforts as Assam gears up for a pivotal electoral battle. With the election schedule yet to be declared, these developments set the stage for intense political maneuvering in the coming weeks.
