Assam Congress Maintains Push for Opposition Unity Despite Raijor Dal Standoff

In a significant political development, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi emphasized on Monday that the party remains committed to forging a united opposition front against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. This statement comes amidst escalating tensions with the Raijor Dal (RD), whose president, Akhil Gogoi, declared over the weekend that prospects for a Congress-RD alliance had collapsed due to unresolved seat-sharing demands.

Seat-Sharing Dispute Centers on Dhing Constituency

The core of the conflict revolves around the minority-dominated Dhing seat in central Assam. Akhil Gogoi publicly criticized Congress for allegedly ignoring repeated appeals to relinquish this constituency to RD, a demand that has become a sticking point in negotiations. He asserted that Congress failed to respond adequately to RD's requests, leading to a breakdown in talks. In response, Gaurav Gogoi, speaking from New Delhi, clarified that efforts are ongoing to form alliances with all opposition parties, indicating that discussions with three political entities—Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), APHLC, and CPM—have already concluded successfully, while talks with others are advancing positively.

Allies Urge Resolution to Prevent Vote Splitting

Congress allies, including AJP and CPM, have intervened in the dispute, appealing to both Congress and RD to preserve the alliance to avoid fragmenting opposition votes. They expressed bewilderment over how a disagreement over a single seat, Dhing, could jeopardize months of collaborative negotiations between two key opposition forces. Without directly naming individuals, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi suggested that only BJP agents might be attempting to sabotage opposition unity, hinting at external influences exacerbating the rift.

Akhil Gogoi Escalates Criticism and Demands Respect

Akhil Gogoi intensified his critique of Congress and Gaurav Gogoi, stating firmly that he would not submit to the party's leadership in Delhi. He contrasted his stance with that of Lurinjyoti Gogoi, questioning whether the AJP president bows to Gaurav Gogoi, while affirming his own commitment to self-esteem and regionalism. Akhil warned that if RD does not receive due respect from Congress, there will be no alliance, underscoring the importance of mutual regard in political partnerships. He also objected to earlier statements by Gaurav Gogoi indicating Congress would contest 100 of Assam's 126 seats, leaving limited opportunities for allies, and claimed that Congress had offered only four "preferred seats" to RD during discussions.

Optimism for Resolution in Coming Days

Despite the current impasse, Gaurav Gogoi expressed optimism that hurdles could be resolved in the next few days, keeping the door open for a potential understanding with RD. This suggests that while tensions are high, there remains a window for reconciliation as both parties navigate the complex landscape of opposition politics in Assam. The ongoing dialogue highlights the challenges of coalition-building in a competitive electoral environment, where seat-sharing and regional interests often collide with broader strategic goals.
