Political Storm Erupts Over Demand for Islamic Institutions Probe
In a dramatic development that has sparked political controversy, Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin has demanded a comprehensive investigation into all Islamic educational and medical institutions across India. This call comes in the aftermath of the recent bomb explosion in Delhi that shook the national capital.
The deputy speaker specifically mentioned institutions operated by prominent Muslim leader and MP Badruddin Ajmal in Assam, though he clarified he wasn't directly accusing Ajmal himself. The demand for scrutiny follows allegations that doctors from Al-Falah University were involved in the Delhi incident, raising serious security concerns.
Momin's Strong Stance on National Security
Speaking on Monday, Momin expressed grave concerns about terrorist activities being planned within educational institutions. "In an Islamic institute, whether it is a medical college or other college, if such terror activities go on, it is a matter of grave concern," he stated emphatically.
The deputy speaker insisted that every Islamic institution in the country, including hospitals and educational establishments in Assam, should undergo thorough scrutiny. He explicitly mentioned that Ajmal's institutions should not be excluded from this investigation, while maintaining that his comments weren't personally directed at the AIUDF leader.
Ajmal's Legal Threat and Counter-Response
Badruddin Ajmal responded strongly to Momin's statements, threatening to file a defamation case against the deputy speaker. He argued that Momin's remarks unfairly created a connection between the Delhi blasts and his hospitals, which primarily serve needy and rural communities across Assam.
"Let's conduct an enquiry. If the govt can prove, the culprits will be punished. We will not side if any individual is involved," Ajmal declared, while simultaneously announcing his intention to pursue legal action. He demanded an immediate apology and retraction of Momin's statements.
The Ajmal family operates several healthcare facilities in key locations including Hojai, Goalpara, Badarpur, and Moirabari, providing essential medical services to underserved populations.
Momin Refuses to Back Down
Despite the legal threats, Numal Momin remained steadfast in his position. In a powerful statement reflecting his determination, he declared, "Today, as a citizen of India and as a son of Assam, I will die by suicide, if someone tells me to apologise for voicing concerns regarding Assam's security."
He vehemently denied any ulterior motives, stating, "I am not promoting Bangladesh or Pakistan. Why should I apologise for speaking on Assam's security?" This strong refusal to retract his statements sets the stage for a prolonged political and legal confrontation.
The controversy has ignited a fresh debate about national security, religious institutions, and political accountability in India, particularly in the sensitive northeastern state of Assam where the issue has deep political ramifications.
