Pranjal Sonowal, an e-rickshaw driver hailing from Talap Gaon village, has become a beacon of hope by offering free rides to students appearing for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examinations.
Easing the Journey to Academic Milestones
Sonowal recognized that the HSLC examination represents a critical turning point for students across Assam, frequently accompanied by significant anxiety and pressure. In many rural areas, where public transportation services can be inconsistent and unreliable, securing timely transport on crucial exam days poses a genuine challenge for families. Observing these difficulties firsthand, Sonowal decided to intervene in his own modest yet impactful manner, initiating a service that provides complimentary transportation specifically for students on their examination days.
Inspiration Drawn from Adversity and Artistry
The driver's motivation stems from a blend of personal experience and artistic admiration. A devoted fan of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, Sonowal openly acknowledges how the musician's philanthropic efforts have influenced his worldview. "I have always listened to his songs and been aware of his endeavors to assist those in need," Sonowal shared. "Although I never had the chance to meet him personally, his acts of kindness left an indelible mark on me. That inspiration certainly contributed to my decision to launch this initiative."
Sonowal's own life journey has been marked by considerable hardship. Previously employed under a contractor at a private company, he was compelled to leave his job after sustaining severe injuries in an accident two years ago, which resulted in broken hands. During his recovery period, seeking a means to support himself, he turned to ferrying passengers as an e-rickshaw driver.
A Childhood of Challenges Shapes a Compassionate Adulthood
Coming from a modest family background, Sonowal's educational opportunities were limited, forcing him to discontinue his studies after completing the tenth standard. He recounted that his childhood and adolescent years were fraught with numerous obstacles, including persistent financial constraints and early family responsibilities. "I attended Talap Middle School until the seventh standard, then enrolled at Dangari Higher Secondary School, but I had to leave before attempting the matriculation examinations," he explained.
"Our family struggled with poverty, and I encountered hardships from a very young age," Sonowal reflected. "Growing up in such circumstances gave me a deep understanding of the struggles faced by those lacking basic necessities. Perhaps those formative experiences fundamentally shaped my perspective. I often felt that if I ever had the opportunity, I would strive to do something selflessly for others, particularly for individuals enduring the same difficulties I once faced."
This initiative not only alleviates practical transportation burdens for students but also serves as a powerful testament to how individual actions, rooted in empathy and resilience, can foster community solidarity and inspire collective goodwill.
