Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Voter Turnout Surges Past 2021 Figures
Guwahati: The single-phase assembly elections in Assam on Thursday witnessed a remarkable and consistent build-up in voter turnout, with the Election Commission's two-hourly reports showing participation levels consistently ahead of the previous election held in 2021. Despite morning showers and a gloomy sky that temporarily slowed some polling booths, voters queued up in large numbers across the state, pushing the turnout curve higher at every reporting round throughout the day.
Steady Increase in Voter Participation Throughout the Day
The Election Commission's provisional data reveals a clear pattern of increased voter enthusiasm compared to the 2021 elections. At 9 AM, the turnout stood at an impressive 17.87%, compared to just 11.18% at the same time in 2021—representing an early surge of nearly seven percentage points. This momentum continued to build as the day progressed.
By 11 AM, the gap widened further, with 38.92% of voters casting their ballots against 28.9% five years ago, marking a substantial jump of ten percentage points. The afternoon hours saw even greater participation, with turnout reaching 59.63% at 1 PM, up from 48.8% in 2021—another increase of almost eleven percentage points.
Record-Breaking Turnout Figures by Closing Time
As polling continued through the afternoon, participation climbed to 75.91% by 3 PM, compared to 64.47% in 2021, maintaining a difference of more than eleven percentage points. When polling gates officially closed at 5 PM, the provisional turnout stood at 84.42%, comfortably ahead of the 76.66% recorded at the same hour in the previous election.
These figures are provisional and likely to rise further after final compilation, as late-hour voters and remote booth data are added to the official count. The Election Commission's data shows a consistent pattern: every two-hour block in 2026 registered a rise of 6–11 percentage points over the corresponding period in 2021.
Historical Context and Potential Records
The final turnout in Assam's 2021 assembly elections was 82.09%, while 2016 set the state's record at 84.67%—the year that marked the BJP's first victory in the northeastern state. With 2026 already reporting 84.42% by 5 PM, Assam is on course to match or even surpass the historic 2016 figure once all late compilations are complete.
Officials noted that while morning rain initially slowed some polling stations, conditions cleared later in the day, encouraging voters to step out in larger numbers. The steady queues in urban centres combined with strong participation in rural belts contributed significantly to the overall surge in voter turnout.
Reflecting Assam's Electoral Culture
The turnout trajectory underscores a striking feature of Assam's electoral culture: remarkable resilience and enthusiasm among voters. From the early morning drizzle to the closing of gates at 5 PM, voters maintained consistent momentum, ensuring that the 2026 assembly elections will be remembered as one of the most participatory in the state's political history.
The build-up was steady rather than sporadic, suggesting improved voter mobilisation and heightened political engagement across constituencies. This consistent pattern of increased participation throughout the voting day points to a well-organized electoral process and genuine voter interest in shaping the state's political future.
