Assam Assembly Elections Achieve Historic 85.96% Voter Turnout
The Election Commission of India announced on Saturday that Assam's Assembly elections held on April 9 witnessed a record-breaking voter turnout of 85.96 percent of the state's 2.50 crore electorate. This figure marks the highest participation rate in Assam's electoral history, demonstrating robust democratic engagement across the northeastern state.
Surpassing Previous Records and Trends
The newly confirmed turnout of 85.96 percent exceeds the previous benchmark of 84.72 percent established during the 2016 Assembly elections, when the Bharatiya Janata Party first ascended to power in the state. This represents a significant recovery from the 82.04 percent turnout recorded in the 2021 polls, which were conducted under stringent COVID-19 protocols that likely suppressed participation.
The Election Commission had initially estimated the turnout at 85.64 percent immediately after polling concluded on Thursday. This figure was subsequently revised upward to 85.91 percent on Friday before the final confirmation of 85.96 percent was issued as comprehensive data from all polling stations across Assam became available.
Gender-Wise Participation and Constituency Highlights
Women voters demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm, recording a turnout of 86.54 percent, which notably surpassed the 85.37 percent participation rate among male voters. Approximately 35.85 percent of third-gender voters exercised their franchise, contributing to the overall democratic process. Both male and female voter participation showed improvement compared to the 2021 election levels.
At the constituency level, several areas witnessed exceptionally high engagement:
- Birsing-Jarua in Dhubri district led with 96.54 percent turnout
- Jaleswar followed closely at 96.28 percent
- Srijangram recorded 96.07 percent participation
Conversely, urban centers showed relatively lower turnout figures:
- New Guwahati registered the lowest at 72.37 percent
- Dispur recorded 75.04 percent
- Guwahati Central saw 76.07 percent participation
Notable Patterns and Political Implications
A remarkable 24 constituencies, predominantly in minority-dominated regions, achieved turnout rates exceeding 90 percent. This represents more than triple the seven such seats that reached this threshold in 2021. Furthermore, seven constituencies witnessed polling above the 95 percent mark, indicating extraordinary civic participation in specific areas.
All 11 assembly segments under the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency crossed the 90 percent turnout threshold, demonstrating consistent high engagement across this parliamentary region.
In Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's Jalukbari constituency, turnout stood at 82.04 percent, showing a marginal decrease from the 82.34 percent recorded in 2021. Meanwhile, Jorhat constituency, where State Congress President Gaurav Gogoi is contesting, experienced a notable increase to 78.64 percent from 74.67 percent in the previous elections.
The unprecedented voter participation across Assam reflects growing political awareness and engagement among the electorate, potentially influencing the electoral outcomes as vote counting proceeds. This historic turnout underscores the vitality of democratic processes in India's northeastern states and sets a new benchmark for future elections in the region.
