Modernization Project for Assam State Zoo
The Divisional Forest Officer of the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden presented details to the court, revealing that a governmental decision has been made to overhaul zoos across the state. A significant work order has been issued by the Public Works Department (Building) for the modernization of the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 345 crore. This ambitious project is scheduled for completion by November 29, 2026.
Forest Department Standing Counsel D. Gogoi elaborated that the project aims to modernize and enhance the overall infrastructure for animals, staff, and visitors. He emphasized that the specifications for animal enclosures are undergoing a major overhaul, aligning with the guidelines issued by the Central Zoo Authority under the Recognition of Zoo Rules, 2009.

The court noted that the affidavit submitted by the forest department addresses concerns about exotic animals being housed in cramped spaces. It highlighted that the Assam State Zoo functions as a rescue and rehabilitation center for distressed wild animals, particularly exotic species rescued from smuggling attempts.
