Assam Opposition Unity Hangs in Balance Over Seat-Sharing Demands
Guwahati: The fragile unity among opposition parties in Assam has reached a critical juncture, with Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi issuing what he termed a 'last letter' to the Congress party. The communication urgently calls for Congress to relinquish multiple seats in upper Assam to Raijor Dal, casting doubt on the opposition's ability to form a cohesive electoral alliance in the coming days.
Raijor Dal's Ultimatum to Congress Leadership
Akhil Gogoi revealed that Raijor Dal has been offered only four 'favourable seats' in preliminary discussions, a number he deems insufficient for meaningful participation. He has insisted on securing additional constituencies in the strategically important upper Assam region as a non-negotiable condition for finalizing the alliance agreement.
"We are fully committed to the opposition alliance; that is precisely why we are requesting Congress to allocate us 15 seats of our choice," Akhil stated emphatically. "Congress has thus far offered only 4 seats that align with our preferences. We require 15, or at minimum 12 seats of our selection, to remain part of this coalition."
Upper Assam's Electoral Significance
The upper Assam region holds particular electoral importance, with approximately 30 out of the state's 126 assembly constituencies. Indigenous tribes and communities play a determining role in these areas, making them crucial battlegrounds for any political formation seeking electoral success.
Congress Response and Internal Calculations
Following a high-level meeting with the All India Congress Committee leadership in New Delhi on Saturday, state Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi struck a conciliatory yet firm tone. "Every participating party must be prepared to make sacrifices. Congress cannot be expected to sacrifice alone. We have already conceded more than initially anticipated," he remarked.
Gaurav Gogoi had previously caused consternation among potential alliance partners by declaring that Congress would contest approximately 100 seats before considering allocations to other coalition members. Internal Congress sources indicate that the formula for finalizing seat-sharing arrangements remains unresolved, even as senior party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra conducted strategic visits to the state this week.
Equity Concerns and Deadline Pressure
Akhil Gogoi raised substantive concerns about the proposed distribution, arguing that allocating merely 26 seats among six anti-BJP parties represents an inequitable arrangement. "If Congress genuinely respects the perspectives and aspirations of other political formations, it will significantly enhance our collective ability to defeat the BJP and its allies," he asserted during Saturday's discussions.
The Raijor Dal leader has imposed a strict deadline, pressing Congress leadership to deliver a definitive decision by Monday to prevent further deterioration of opposition coordination.
AIUDF's Potential Spoiler Role
Complicating matters further, the All India United Democratic Front presents a significant challenge to opposition unity. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has declared that his party will field candidates in approximately 25 constituencies if Congress and Raijor Dal exclude AIUDF from the alliance framework. This move could fragment opposition votes in minority-dominated seats, potentially benefiting the ruling BJP.
Assam Jatiya Parishad's Urgent Appeal
Meanwhile, the Assam Jatiya Parishad has added its voice to the growing chorus of concern, urging Congress to expedite seat-sharing negotiations before the window of opportunity closes. AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi emphasized, "If we are genuinely committed to defeating the BJP, we must proceed with mutual understanding and necessary sacrifices. Time is of the essence, and further delays could prove detrimental to our collective objectives."
The opposition landscape in Assam remains fluid and contentious, with multiple stakeholders jockeying for position while the clock ticks toward electoral deadlines.
