Assam Police Ramp Up Border Security Measures Ahead of Crucial Assembly Elections

In a decisive move to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming electoral process, the Sivasagar district police in Assam have dramatically escalated surveillance operations along the sensitive interstate border with Nagaland. With the Assam assembly elections scheduled for April 9, security forces are implementing comprehensive strategies to block all potential transit routes that could be exploited for illegal activities.

High-Level Field Inspection in Challenging Terrain

On Tuesday, Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Papori Chetia personally led a rigorous field inspection of border outposts (BOPs) located in the difficult forest and hilly terrains along the interstate boundary. The SSP traversed the challenging landscape on foot to meticulously examine vulnerable routes that have historically been used for smuggling illicit liquor, cash, and arms—elements that pose significant threats to electoral fairness.

"Our primary objective is to maintain an airtight security blanket along the interstate border to prevent any external interference in the democratic process," stated SSP Chetia during her assessment. "The morale of our personnel is high, and we have instructed all outposts to maintain 24/7 vigilance on both traditional and unconventional routes. We are committed to providing a safe environment for every voter."

Focus on Nazira Constituency and Operational Coordination

The security measures are particularly crucial for the Nazira assembly constituency, which shares a porous boundary with Nagaland and is one of three key seats in Sivasagar district alongside Sivasagar and Demow. During her inspection, SSP Chetia engaged directly with personnel stationed at remote outposts, evaluating their operational readiness and addressing logistical challenges associated with border protection during the election period.

To enhance effectiveness, coordination between border outposts and district headquarters is being streamlined to facilitate real-time intelligence sharing. This integrated approach ensures that security forces can respond promptly to any emerging threats or suspicious activities.

Comprehensive Security Framework Under Model Code of Conduct

With the Model Code of Conduct now fully enforced, the Sivasagar police have implemented additional security measures across the district:

  • Establishment of new check-gates at strategic locations
  • Deployment of mobile patrolling units for enhanced coverage
  • Implementation of a "zero tolerance" policy toward any movement that could influence election outcomes in the three critical constituencies

The police emphasis remains firmly on preventing the transportation of any materials that could compromise electoral integrity, with special attention to the vulnerable border areas that have historically seen cross-border smuggling activities.

As Assam prepares for this significant democratic exercise, the intensified border surveillance represents a critical component of the state's comprehensive election security apparatus, designed to ensure that voters can participate freely without intimidation or external influence.
