A bronze statue commemorating the legacy of veteran Congress leader and former Union minister, the late B Shankaranand, was formally unveiled in Belagavi on Wednesday evening. The ceremony, held at the prominent Club Road Circle, was led by District Minister Satish Jarkiholi, who paid rich tributes to Shankaranand's enduring contributions to the region and national politics.
A Legacy Etched in Bronze
During the unveiling, Minister Satish Jarkiholi highlighted the remarkable political journey of B Shankaranand, noting that he was elected to the Lok Sabha seven consecutive times from the Chikodi constituency. Jarkiholi emphasized that the people of the constituency continue to hold his work in high regard. "Shankaranand was an influential politician. We remember him with the historical incidents of his time," Jarkiholi stated. He praised Shankaranand's pivotal role in establishing educational institutions, hospitals, and sugar factories across the Belagavi district, calling these contributions "memorable."
The minister expressed hope that the statue would serve as a permanent reminder of his legacy and guide the younger generation. He also announced intentions to further document and promote Shankaranand's work in the district. In a significant political gesture, Jarkiholi assured that if any members of Shankaranand's family wished to enter politics, they would receive the necessary support and cooperation from the party.
Remembering a Kingmaker
The event saw heartfelt recollections from other prominent figures whose careers were shaped by Shankaranand. Prabhakar Kore, President of the KLE Society, credited Shankaranand for bringing him into politics following the death of his brother, Chidananda Kore. Kore described Shankaranand as a powerful figure within the Congress party, who had the authority to finalize election tickets for numerous constituencies in North Karnataka. "He never troubled the opposition parties. His character of helping without any party affiliation was exemplary," Kore remarked. He also revealed Shankaranand's influence extended beyond Karnataka, playing an important role in the appointment of chief ministers in several other states.
Veeranna Mattikatti, former speaker of the legislative council, shared personal anecdotes, recalling how Shankaranand gave him his first election ticket with a smile and campaigned vigorously for his victory. Mattikatti praised Shankaranand's common touch, stating he worked like a common man among the people, which earned him their deep trust and respect.
A Gathering of Dignitaries
The statue unveiling ceremony was attended by a host of political leaders and family members, underscoring the respect Shankaranand commanded across party lines. Notable attendees included legislative council member Prakash Hukkeri, MLA Ganesh Hukkeri, former legislative council member Mahantesh Kavatagimath, Mayor Mangesh Pawar, and Deputy Mayor Vani Joshi. Family members of B Shankaranand, former MLA SB Ghatage, and former minister Shashikant Nayak were also present to honour his memory.
The installation of the statue at a central location in Belagavi is seen as a fitting tribute to a leader whose work left an indelible mark on the development of North Karnataka. It stands not just as a piece of sculpture, but as a testament to a political career dedicated to public service and institution-building.
