Women Protesters Halt Police Arrest Attempt in Bagalkot Shivaji Riot Case
In a dramatic turn of events in Bagalkot, a group of women allegedly stopped police officers who had arrived to arrest activists connected to the Shivaji Jayanti riot case on Friday night. The situation escalated quickly as tensions flared between law enforcement and local residents.
Former MLA's Intervention Calms Tense Standoff
Former MLA Veeranna Charantimath rushed to the scene after being alerted by the protesting women. He played a crucial mediating role, convincing the women to withdraw their protest while simultaneously warning police officials not to provoke the Hindu community. "If you continue the same, then the situation turns worse. Law and order will be disturbed again," Charantimath cautioned the police officers present.
Allegations of Police Misconduct and Arrest Plans
The women protesters alleged that police intended to arrest Muttu Magi and other activists in the Killa area. They immediately contacted former MLA Charantimath and MLC PH Pujar, who both rushed to the location. According to the women, police officers behaved rudely with them during the confrontation.
Charantimath directly addressed DSP Prashant Munnolli, CPI Biradar, and other police officials, insisting that no arrests should be made. He assured the women that he would take responsibility for all activists involved, stating that if police targeted anyone, the women could contact him at any time for assistance.
Religious Leader's Visit Amidst Tensions
Meanwhile, in a related development, Kadasiddeshwar Swami of Kanheri Math visited Rabkavi-Banahatti on Saturday. This marked his first visit after the Bagalkot district administration vacated restrictions on his entry to the area. The religious leader reviewed preparations for the Basavadi Sharanara Hindu Convention scheduled for Sunday at SRA College ground.
Kadasiddeshwar Swami announced that over 300 seers were expected to participate in the upcoming event, highlighting the significant religious gathering occurring amidst the ongoing tensions between local communities and law enforcement.
The incident underscores the delicate balance between law enforcement actions and community sentiments in sensitive cases involving religious and historical figures. The former MLA's intervention prevented what could have escalated into a more serious confrontation, while the simultaneous religious preparations indicate the complex social dynamics at play in the region.
