Behrampore's Political Landscape Transforms into Triangular Contest
Behrampore's Political Shift: Triangular Fight Emerges

Behrampore's Historic Political Shift Intensifies

For the past five years, Behrampore, a historic town in West Bengal, has primarily experienced a bipolar political struggle between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP achieved a dramatic surge in the 2021 assembly elections, increasing its vote share by 35% and securing the seat for the first time in history. This marked a significant departure from the town's traditional political alignment.

Congress Veteran Alters the Equation

However, the political landscape has been reshaped with the entry of veteran Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury, who has returned to Bengal politics after nearly three decades. His participation has transformed the contest into a triangular battle, introducing new volatility and competition. Behrampore, once a Congress bastion for almost 70 years, has undergone a steady political churn, with the saffron shift becoming evident in recent years.

In the 2021 elections, BJP candidate Subrata Maitra, popularly known as Kanchan, delivered a breakthrough victory for the party. He managed to secure over 45% of the vote share, marking the BJP's maiden capture of the seat since Independence. Meanwhile, Naru Gopal Mukherjee of the TMC secured approximately 27,000 votes, pushing the Congress to a distant third position.

Campaign Strategies and Key Issues

Seeking re-election for another term, Maitra's campaign is centered on welfare initiatives and a hardline narrative. He has opted for a hyperlocal campaign approach, avoiding large rallies and instead focusing on direct voter engagement. "I cover about 500 households daily. People can witness the development Behrampore town has undergone in the past five years. However, issues like infiltration from Bangladesh and TMC's corruption are hindering overall growth and affecting job opportunities. I am confident of victory and a broader change in the state," stated Maitra.

Despite the BJP's rise, Chowdhury's entry has injected uncertainty into what might have otherwise remained a bipolar contest. A five-time MP, Chowdhury lost the Behrampore Lok Sabha seat in 2024 to former cricketer and Trinamool candidate Yusuf Pathan by over 85,000 votes. Now, he is attempting a political reset by replacing three-time Congress MLA Manoj Chakraborty, who suffered a 48% slide in vote share in 2021.

"People in Behrampore know me very well. They love and trust me. The BJP and TMC are engaging in dirty politics of communal partisanship, threats, and fake promises, such as increasing the Lakshmir Bhandar amount. I believe the people of Behrampore will choose the right candidate," asserted Chowdhury. After his parliamentary defeat, which saw a sharp dip in his vote share, Chowdhury described his political future as "uncertain", but his return to the Vidhansabha arena signals a determined effort to reclaim lost ground on his home turf.

Rival Reactions and Structural Challenges

Chowdhury's return, however, is being dismissed outright by his political rivals. Naru Gopal Mukherjee, the Behrampore municipality chairperson and TMC nominee, commented, "Adhir Chowdhury is no longer a factor. If he were significant, he would have won in 2024. He is contesting for his own survival, not for the party. The real fight is between the TMC and BJP, and people will vote for us." In 2021, the TMC improved its numbers with a 12.4% rise in vote share, though it fell short against the BJP's substantial surge.

Political observers note that Chowdhury's personal connect with voters, particularly those above 40 years of age, remains intact. "He has the potential to cut into both BJP and TMC vote shares," said Anupam Bhattacharya, a local voter. Nonetheless, the Congress faces structural challenges, including organizational weaknesses and the need to rebuild its base in a rapidly changing political environment.

The evolving dynamics in Behrampore highlight a critical juncture in West Bengal's politics, with all three major parties vying for dominance in this historic town.
